Ballet's rarity is due in part to the scale of its edition—only 500 copies were produced for its 1945 release—and to a 1956 fire at Brodovitch's home that destroyed the photographs and negatives that comprise Ballet. Nina Holland has faithfully reconstructed this seminal title, disassembling copies of the original 1945 book, scanning their gravure pages, then printing the reissue using offset-lithographic methods she developed to mimic the original's quality, down to the unique streaks and smudges of ink found on the original copies from the risk and spontaneity of its printing. Described by The New York Times as "an intentional challenge to the stillness of photography," Ballet is a dance within itself: groundbreaking and cinematic in every aspect, from its photographs to printing.
