Ballet's rarity is due in part to the scale of its edition—only 500 copies were produced for its 1945 release—and to a 1956 fire at Brodovitch's home that destroyed the photographs and negatives that comprise Ballet. Nina Holland has faithfully reconstructed this seminal title, disassembling copies of the original 1945 book, scanning their gravure pages, then printing the reissue using offset-lithographic methods she developed to mimic the original's quality, down to the unique streaks and smudges of ink found on the original copies from the risk and spontaneity of its printing. Described by The New York Times as "an intentional challenge to the stillness of photography," Ballet is a dance within itself: groundbreaking and cinematic in every aspect, from its photographs to printing.

Charles Wilder Oakes’ Voices of Old Port Clyde tells the story of the artist’s home through its quilted scenes of berry pickers, collaged between the evening skyline and a rainbow of text that reads both as poetry and a journal entry, further immortalizing “those dear old voices of Port Clyde”. Familiar domestic objects appear in the painting—a PBR can, a padlock, a flashlight—both representationally and in text. The longer you spend with the piece, the more it reveals itself as a love note to the coastal community for which it was painted.

Below Whitehead, Monhegan Island is a plein air painting by artist Stan Moeller, begun on the island itself and finished back in the artist’s York studio. Moeller captures the cool October light beautifully, inviting us to step into what feels like a private moment with only the sea, the rocks, and far-off seabirds as witnesses. Sitting with this painting, it is hard not to fall under a spell of quiet peace, even as surf breaks against the rocky shoreline.

In Dialogue: Dustan Knight & Charles Wilder Oakes

Both Dustan and Charles work with oil on wood, creating paintings that occupy physical space in a uniquely three-dimensional sense. With both artists hailing from small, coastal towns, there is an alluring play between the works that is further emphasized by the commonalities in their visual language and medium. From Port Clyde to Portsmouth, and now hung in Rockland, the spirit of these coastal communities transcends.

Pia-Paulina Guilmoth’s “Flowers Drink the River” has quickly become a coveted title. Recently sold out by the publisher, we have two signed copies left here in the Blue Raven Gallery Book Nook!

From the publisher: "Using a large format camera and careful analogue techniques, Pia finds an entrancing, mystical presence in her daily experiences amidst the forests, fields, and rivers of her home. Pia’s hazy images, filled with light aberrations and glowing spectres, leave us suspended mid-ritual."

Susan Cooney, has graciously allowed us a deeper look into her artistic process and the inspiration behind her work.

As she describes: “For my drawings, I focus on four key elements: rock, tree, water, and sky, creating a balanced relationship between them. I use graphite for its versatility in capturing textures and tonal range, which helps define light, depth, and detail. The lack of color allows subtle textures and light to stand out. I work from 4″ x 6″ photos I’ve taken around Maine. Sometimes the photo composition is perfect as is, but usually, I make changes to create a new vision.”

The essence of the place is preserved but also infused with Susan’s unique perspective. Her subtle play with texture and light, especially without color evoke and emotional depth. We’re grateful she’s shared her process with us! see our link in our bio to learn more and to sign up for our newsletter.
