Almost every residential project I have had recently has had some sort of kitchen remodeling. So this survey I found of interest, not least of which it seems that three-quarters of the respondents do not currently have a range hood.

This seems really bizarre to me, even though the result of my own recent kitchen remodel means that for the first time our 120-plus year old house has a:

Range hood
Dishwasher
Garbage disposal

Work on the barn is far enough along that one gets the idea. The cottage will be similar.

This is why the large scale housing projects of the 1960's were complete failures - they created economic deserts where residents had to leave the development for the daily commerce of life. You can't buy or engage any services within what is basically a high-rise suburban wasteland. Stuyvesant Town–Peter Cooper Village on Manhattan's east side.

Came upon this in Providence - it demonstrates the importance of fire separation assemblies. I have no idea how the building was used, but as you see, it was completely engulfed by the fire. The side walls are 12 inch thick concrete block, a natural two hour barrier that protected the adjacent structure.
