We're investing in a better visitor experience! Beginning immediately, our elevator will be temporarily out of service while we complete scheduled upgrades and repairs. We anticipate the project will be finished by June 26.

We understand this may affect some visitors, and we're committed to ensuring everyone can still enjoy the Museum. Guests who are unable to safely or comfortably use the stairs can access:

πŸŽ₯ A video walkthrough of our 2nd Floor exhibits
πŸ’» An in-depth digital exhibit experience available via QR code
πŸ“Ή A live-stream view from our 3rd Floor Observation Deck available via QR code.

These resources will be available in the 1st Floor Library at the Museum.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make these important improvements. The result will be a better, more accessible experience for our visitors for years to come.

The Texas coast has been getting lots of much-needed and appreciated rain. Luckily, we haven't reached this level of flooding yet! This photograph, from May 18th, 1925, shows a view of Pearl Street looking north in downtown Beaumont during a period of major flooding!

Have you ever wanted to go inside a lighthouse?

The historic Post Isabel lighthouse is the only one open to the public in Texas! Constructed in 1852, the 72' lighthouse served the coast in more ways than one. Both Union and Confederate forces used the tower as a lookout during the Civil War.

In 1905, the lighthouse was decommissioned due to the decline of maritime traffic in the area. The land and lighthouse were donated to the state in 1950, and two years later, became a state park. Today, you can see the beautiful tower for yourself, lit with a replica revolving 3rd Order Fresnel Lens.

In the early 1900s, Harbor Island, the stretch of land connecting Aransas Pass and Port Aransas, was a vital area to the growth of the area. In 1913, a cotton compress was constructed on the island, providing a great source of industry to the community. This photograph, from sometime between 1900 and 1909, shows us a glimpse of what working in this compress looked like.

Zavala Model, 1986

In 1986, Clive Cussler financed the discovery of the wreckage by NUMA and the Texas Antiquities Committee in Galveston. To commemorate the event, Cussler presented a model to Governor Clements.

The Zavala (1838-1843) was important because it had transitional technology - sails (two masts) and steam (two walking beam engines, two paddlewheels 2' in diameter).
