Today is the Reception for Law Hamilton's Solo Show at 1pm! This photograph, 'Uprising – TS Lee' by Law Hamilton, is featured in her Solo Show: Spirited Seas, on view now at the Rockport Art Association & Museum!
Hear her describe these works in her own words:
"My draw to the ocean's edge during storms on the Atlantic is visceral and hard to explain. When the weather turns and I can hear the surf, I pack my gear and walk to Long Beach in Rockport. Some days I find dark water in low light, or the wind tearing spindrift off a cresting wave. If the storm clears, I sometimes stay for the sunlight to break through. Once, a collapsing breaker drenched me while I stood in the white water. Standing on shore in howling wind, with waves pounding in, I feel strangely calm. The storm quiets everything else and lets me focus on the photography.
Many of these are portraits of a single wave. The Break Point Series, shot on January 26, 2026, goes further, using five frames to build a portrait of one wave and a sense of the storm around it. Two frames come before the wave breaks and two after, and I titled them the way a photographer brackets an exposure: -2, -1, Break Point, +1, +2.
The rest of the show comes from nor'easters and high surf at Long Beach, plus images from Tropical Storm Lee in September 2023. I shot the TS Lee images tucked into a granite outcropping at Halibut Point in high wind, having already lost my reading glasses to the storm.
Every storm has its own personality, and every wave carries it. I want to share the feeling of standing at the edge of a spirited sea when it's at full strength."
