Last night's bat check prior to the usual start of bat season (May 1) yielded BAD NEWS. We didn't see any bats until 8:30 when it was pretty darn dark and then we counted tiny numbers. In a three minute period, we counted about 12.
We recommend bat tourists to wait awhile.
The Society gives tours Wednesdays through Sundays. The best tours right now are the day tour (to just see the cave) and the nature walk (see the cave a walk a mile or so along one of our trails.)
We will give bat tours, but we don't recommend them.
Day and nature walk tours start at 10 AM and 1 PM.
The bat tour, though not recommended, starts at 7:15 PM. (This changes occasionally due to changing bat emergence times.)
ALL SINKHOLE TOURS begin at the ROCKSPRINGS VISITORS CENTER on the town square.
Call 830-683-2287 for more information. The Visitors Center is open 10 AM-3 PM, Wednesdays through Sundays.

Dennis and Andrew checked for bats at the great cave this week. Emergence is around 8 PM but numbers are slim. A very quick hawk swooped through numerous times as the bats came up from the massive cave. We are not ready for bat tours yet: numbers are slim and it's pretty darn dark by the time the swirl gets going.
🙂
Lots of day tours under way Wednesday through Sunday. Good wildflowers all over, a good variety of birds, a couple of elk the other day...🙂
Our third raffle hunt of the year is Friday through Sunday, April 17 through 19. Good luck to those hunters, and no tours will be held while the hunters are at the state natural area.😊

Great response to our annual mailer--Thanks and keep the dues and other contributions coming!
Typical Saturday: late day tour with two funny gents from Houston and Fort Worth, then as we said goodbye at the state natural area gate, a very nice couple from Switzerland joined our guide for a second late day tour.
Happy Easter and Passover weekend, y'all!

Happy Birthday to Dell Smith, 105 years old, our most senior "bat" (Devil's Sinkhole Society member.)

Day tours and nature walks are available NOW (and mostly year long) at the Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area. They are guided and we aim to start the morning tours at 10 AM and the afternoon tours at 1 PM, but we are flexible and we accommodate both late and early arrivals as much as possible. (Birders, in particular, often like to schedule earlier tours--and that's AOK!)
We are available for these tours Wednesday through Sunday, five out of seven days a week.
Tours start at the Rocksprings Visitors Center on the Rocksprings town square.
Call us to set up your tour (830-683-2287) or email [email protected].

The Visitor’s Center will be closed this weekend, the 10th & 11th. It will be open next week normal hours, but the only tours available will be Wednesday due to a hunt at the Sinkhole.
