Breeches Buoy Reenactment
You don't want to miss this! The first drill for the season will be held this Thursday, May 21st at 1:30 pm with a presentation by Carl Smith, Ret. CMDR USCG on the side porch of Chicamacomico's 1911 Station. Then at 2:00 pm our surfmen will perform the drill in the field behind the 1874 station.
Our men will be wearing plain clothes for this first drill as it is a training session for our new volunteer surfmen.

Our season kicks off this Thursday! Join us on the front porch at 1:30 for some USLSS history and highlights before we head to the drill field at 2:00 to see the Breeches Buoy Reenactment. Talk about living history…the skill you’ll see is how the surfman would have done it over a hundred and fifty years ago!

We’re also a Dare County A250 Passport Program location so find the QR code to register your passport stamp. While you’re scanning the QR code, be on the lookout to see the station’s stops to hear even more history about items in our museum!

One hundred fourteen years ago today, Titanic has seen her last sunset. In just over two hours, the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station crew will hear the distress calls as they are the closest land based rescue station to her location. Staff members at the Us Bureau Weather Station Hatteras will try to be helpful by sending a telegram to New York City as they too heard the distress calls. Unfortunately they weren’t believed and were promptly fired for “lying and junking up the lines.”

In 2009, during a restoration project, a page from the Weather Station log book was found that records the facts received from the Titanic regarding the iceberg strike.

Titanic Live: April 14th, 1912, 8.00 AM - Sunday morning has found Titanic nearly 1,500 miles from the coast of Ireland after her last ever dawn at sea. Anglican Church services will be performed today in all classes, most notably with a large gathering in the First Class Dining Saloon which will be overseen by Captain Smith himself and attended by a number of prominent passengers - to begin at 10.30. In other areas, several less formal services are observed.

An early morning lifeboat drill has been cancelled, most likely due to unfavorably windy conditions. Though several other reasons have been cited in period accounts, including the aforementioned church services aboard, this is latterly explanation is unlikely, as the services being performed today are routine aboard most transatlantic vessels and would have been planned for well in advance. Throughout the liner, passengers and crew begin early preparations for arrival in New York, which include provision for an expected influx of members of the press upon her docking at Hudson River Pier 59 on Wednesday morning.

Among the hymns confirmed sung on Titanic today is the Navy standard “Eternal Father Strong to Save” often referred to colloquially as “For Those In Peril on the Sea” for the last lines of its first stanza.
