The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum would like to extend their deepest condolences to the family of Peter Hahn.
Peter and his shipmates were instrumental in saving the lives of many crewmen from the S.S. Cedarville which sank in the Straits of Mackinac.
On May 7, 1965 while passing through the Straits of Mackinac in Lake Huron, the merchant ship Weissenburg intercepted an SOS emergency call from the Cedarville which began to sink after a collision in dense fog.
The Weissenburg set course for the damaged ship. Peter and his crew mates launched its lifeboats in search of survivors. In the course of 30 minutes sailors were found and brought safely on board of the rescue ship.
Peter, a native of Hamburg Germany, passed away on April 15, 2026. Peter is survived by his wife Irma and two daughters.
On behalf of all of us at the Lore Museum, the families and friends of the Cedarville crew and the City of Rogers City, Michigan we THANK YOU Peter for your service and friendship throughout the years.
May you rest in peace.

Sailing back in time on the S.S. Chief Wawatam. 1911-1984
Chief Wawatam (nicknamed The Chief) was based for most of its working life in St. Ignace, Michigan. The vessel was named after distinguished Ojibway Chief of the 1760s. The Chief served as a train ferry, passenger ferry, and icebreaker that operated year round at the Straits of Mackinac between St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. Chief Wawatam was 338 feet in length and had a beam of 62 feet.
Chief Wawatam could carry 348 passengers and had hotel service staff of 30 people in addition to the 24 crew members that just operated the vessel.

Dave Erickson 1941-2021
Dave served as the director of the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum for more than 15 years. He loved the Museum and could often be found working there even on days when it was closed. Among his many accomplishments was the retrieval of the Bradley Bell in 2007 that is now one of the Museum’s most prized artifacts. It is on display in our Memorial Hall. The Museum welcomes many visitors each year who make the trip especially to see the Bradley Bell and explore our great port town.

In 1995 the Brklacich’s bought and renovated an old one room school house in Sebewaing, Michigan.
They filled it with many pictures, artifacts and equipment from the shipping industry and opened its doors to the public.
Eventually Ed could see the Museum was outgrowing its first home in Sebewaing, and the decision was made to relocate to Rogers City, Michigan.
Rogers City is a port city where many sailors and their families still live.
In 2003 the Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum officially opened its doors to its new home.
