Landon Perkins: Caution No. 1–7

“What really is a ‘boundary’ when you look at land from a larger perspective? At a boundary, you can simultaneously be in two places at once—just by stepping back and forth between an invisible line.”

Perkins’s “Caution” pieces invite you to step into the in-between and reconsider the systems that define our space.

Explore the full “Forward Places” solo exhibition now through 05.28.

Mixed Media (Acrylic on Stitched Canvas)

ARTIST STATEMENT:
“This piece started from remnants of 3 other unfinished paintings I had in my studio. As I began to think through the concept of ‘what’ this piece could be…I kept returning to the idea of stitching. Our present environments are an amalgamation of histories of decisions. All of which have lead to the physicalness in the present. So I began to create from that place — I stitched and painted 3 separate landscapes together to create this assemblage. I stitched by hand, I stitched by machine, and I manicured the work. It is an abstraction of landscape - one for the present, one for the future and one that is unknowable.

“You have to be willing to be bad at something again. That’s where growth happens.”

Landon Perkins doesn’t let a single medium define him; instead, he lets the idea lead the way — balancing structure and spontaneity with a deep focus on the human hand.

In our latest Artist Spotlight, we sit down with Landon to discuss his transition from a childhood in Tallahassee to his role as an Exhibition Designer at Crystal Bridges, and how those experiences shaped his latest solo show, Forward Places.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
“A tree root pulled from my front yard. It took me four hours to remove by hand - all so my wife could plant a ‘prettier’ plant in exactly the same spot. This work is an idol to all of the manicuring we each do in our individual lives in landscapes. These systems keep changing with or without our inputs over vast amounts of time. We no longer hunt and gather in the traditional sense - we consume and we curate back into our surrounding places.”

Forward Places invites viewers to question whether we are truly advancing or simply circling familiar ground, suggesting that meaning itself is shaped not by fixed truths, but by the ways in which they are presented.
