Ever heard of Muscovy ducks?

They’re a familiar sight on many farms, and for good reason. These handy little helpers are great at keeping things in balance—they snack on flies, mosquitoes, and other pesky bugs, making them a natural kind of pest control. On top of that, they’re known for being hardy and easy to care for.

And the best part? These friendly Muscovy ducks are right here at The Amish Village, just waiting for you to stop by and say hello.

Summertime around here is just about perfect for one of the favorite pastimes of Amish women—canning up all that fresh goodness straight from the garden. With fields full of ripe vegetables, it’s a busy and satisfying season.

Much of that canning and preserving takes place in the Summer Kitchen, gathered around a big, hardworking stove, where jars are filled, stories are shared, and the day’s harvest is put by for months to come.

Today, we thought we’d shine a light on a real local favorite—Chow Chow. It’s a one-of-a-kind mix that’s been enjoyed for generations, and we’re happy to share an authentic Amish recipe with you. https://www.amishvillage.com/blog/recipe-spotlight-chow-chow/

Give it a try and enjoy a little taste of summer, just like they’ve been doing for years.

We’re always glad to welcome folks who are curious about the Amish way of life—especially young learners with plenty of questions and wonder.

Our school class trips are a great fit for children in kindergarten through 6th grade, but we’re more than happy to adjust things for older students, too. If you’ve got lesson plans or ideas in mind, just send them our way a couple of weeks before your visit, and we’ll work together to shape a trip that fits your class just right.

Teachers and school leaders, if you’ve got something special in mind, don’t be shy—reach out and let’s talk it through. Maybe your students would enjoy some time meeting the farm animals in the barn, or sitting in on a one-room schoolhouse experience like days gone by. However you’d like to learn, we’ll do our best to make your visit to Lancaster County something your students will remember for years to come.

When you come to Lancaster County, there’s a good chance you’ll cross paths with the local Amish community and get a glimpse of their simple, time-honored way of life. And if you listen close, you might hear a language that sounds a little different from what you’re used to.

Around here, many Amish folks speak what’s called Pennsylvania Dutch—sometimes known as Pennsylvania German or Pennsylvania Deutsch. It’s a language that’s been passed down through generations and is a big part of everyday life in the community.

You’ll also hear plenty of English, especially when Amish folks are talking with visitors, handling business, or in the classroom. Amish children learn in English at school through the 8th grade, and it’s the go-to language when connecting with the wider world.

If you’re curious to learn a bit more, we’d love for you to take a peek at our blog, *“What Languages Do the Lancaster County Amish Speak?”* It’s a friendly little read that helps bring it all to life.

We want everyone to feel right at home when they visit The Amish Village.

Good news—our grounds are nice and level, making it easy to get around with a wheelchair, and the first floor of the farmhouse tour is fully accessible. If you’re not able to head upstairs, we’ve got you covered with a picture guide and script so you won’t miss a thing.

Since you’ll be spending time outdoors, it’s best to dress for the weather and keep things comfortable. And as a courtesy, we do ask folks to wear modest, respectful attire while visiting.

If you’ve got any questions before you come, just let us know—we’re always glad to help.

There’s just something special about a loaf of homemade bread, isn’t there?

The smell alone—warm and ye**ty, drifting through the house—feels like a welcome hug from the kitchen. It’s the kind of thing that slows you down a minute, brings folks to the table, and makes a simple day feel a little richer.

Fresh from the oven, with a pat of butter melting right into a thick slice… well, that’s about as good as it gets. No fuss, no frills—just honest, homemade goodness made with a little time and a whole lot of heart.

Well, we have an authentic Amish recipe for real homemade bread! Click here to download our booklet with several Amish recipes: https://www.amishvillage.com/l/amish-village-recipe-book/

Ascension Day is an important and meaningful day for many Amish families, coming along about 40 days after Easter, always on a Thursday. It marks the time when Jesus ascended into heaven, and it’s set aside with a quiet kind of reverence.

On this day, things slow down. Shops close their doors, work is put aside, and folks turn their attention to family, worship, and reflection. It’s a lot like a Sunday—peaceful and unhurried—though the simple, necessary chores, like tending to the animals, still get done, as they always do.
