Maidu Museum & Historic Site Connecting with the past to inspire the future!

We are a museum located on Nisenan homeland, dedicated to sharing the art, history, and culture of Native Californians. The Maidu Museum & Historic Site offers visitors a unique combination of a world class museum and 6,000 year old Native Californian Indian village site. Graced by oak trees and bordered on the south by a branch of Linda Creek/Strap Ravine, the nature area offers a loop trail that

takes you past ancient petroglyphs and hundreds of bedrock mortars for grinding acorns; evidence of Nisenan / Southern Maidu occupation of the site for thousands of years. Inside the museum you'll find exhibits portraying the Maidu way of life as well as an art gallery featuring the talents of contemporary Native Americans. The Museum Gift Shop offers a wide selection of books about Native Californians, handmade jewelry, minerals, arrowheads, other cultural artifacts and many nature-related items. See brilliant red blooms that match the summer heat 🏵️☀️

Blanketflower is a beautiful yet hardy wildflower that loves soaking up the sun, and unlike humans, it doesn't even need much water after all that sunshine! This makes it the perfect drought resistant flower for dry meadows and rock gardens. 🌱

Blanketflower is not only admired by people. The Blanketflower Moth has evolved to perfectly blend in with the flower, using its vibrant colors as camouflage from predators. Nature's disguise at its finest! 🌼 The bright colors of the flower make it especially attractive to other pollinators, like native bees, and it is even a preferred food source for California Bighorn Sheep in late summer.

Smell the California Indian To***co plant in the air when you come to the Maidu Museum🌿
For Indigenous peoples throughout California, to***co has long held deep cultural significance. It is used for social gatherings, ceremonies, medicine, economic transactions, story-telling, resources tending, and recreation!
Different tribes have their own traditions surrounding this important plant and can be used in different ways. For example, some Miwok communities harvest the green plant whole, dry them in the shade, and shred the leaves for smoking, while other groups use to***co in forms such as cakes!

This golden bloom can be found all across the state and has long been valued by California Native Peoples for its uses in food and medicine!
Not only is it cherished by Indigenous communities, but Spanish explorers also gave it the nickname “Copa de Oro” or “Cup of Gold.” According to legend, the vibrant orange petals were so brilliant they filled the soil with gold💛

The Soaproot flower opens in the evening, making early mornings the perfect time to catch this beautiful bloom before the heat of the day arrives 🌄
Soaproot is an important plant for California Native Peoples and has multiple different uses. As the name suggests this plant is perfect for making soap, but it can also be turned into tools, like a brush, emergancy food supply, and can even be used for fishing🐟
