This Thursday, October 2! Moya del Pino's Murals: How they came to be, and where to find them today

José Moya del Pino, our library’s namesake, was the founding vice-president of the Marin Art and Garden Center and a past president of the Marin Society of Artists. He was locally best known for his portraits and landscapes, but also produced quite a few murals for the WPA during the Great Depression, and for schools, businesses, and private homes. His granddaughter Paola Coda will show some of this iconic work, from Coit Tower to breweries and post offices; share how they came to be; and let you know where you can still see them today.

In his decades of scanning old newspapers he has stumbled upon numerous odd and surprising stories including a brutal murder on the streets of San Rafael by Kit Carson, a haunted jail cell, the disappearance of society matron Mrs. Mailliard, the proposed prismoidal railroad, and the mysterious Black Hole of Marin.

We are beyond grateful to receive an original copy, in excellent condition, of the Visitors’ Guide to the 1925 Velazquez Exhibition. A heartfelt thank you to Marco Calderon for this incredible contribution! Your support helps us continue our mission of education, preservation, and inspiration.

The Velazquez Exhibition is what brought our library’s namesake, José Moya del Pino, to the United States from his native Spain—along with 40 faithfully and painstakingly copied paintings by Velazquez, under the auspices of Alphonso XIII, King of Spain. The coat of arms of the Spanish Crown is on the cover; in the first few pages you can see photos of José Moya del Pino and the King of Spain reviewing the portrait Moya del Pino painted of him. The guide was written in both English and Spanish.

Please join us in thanking Mr. Calderon! Learn more about this generous donor at linkedin.com/in/marco-calderon-a91b60132
