Time capsule from the Bicentennial sealed in 1979. Buried in the courtyard of the former high school, now Ninth Grade Center, it was opened exactly 47 years later as the country readies to celebrate its 250th. The historical society located articles from The Reporter newspaper and was pleased to be included in the opening.

HELP US CELEBRATE OUR OLDEST MEMBER!

Mildred (Mille) Weigner was born on May 26, 1926. This Royersford resident, who regularly can be spotted walking up and down Main Street, or driving around town, will be turning 100 this month! She recently shared her century of remembrances as part of the historical society's senior memories project. Mille is SFAHS's oldest member and we're planning a SURPRISE celebration on Sunday, May 17 from 1:00-3:00 PM.

We would LOVE to present Mille with more than 100 cards wishing her a happy 100th birthday. Would you please take a minute and send one to the society's post office box and we'll give them to her on the 17th? Feel free to stop by on the 17th and also wish her a happy birthday in person. REMEMBER, IT'S A SURPRISE! [DRW]

The number one reason we always say that if you’re going through old family photos and wondering, "What am I supposed to do with these? I don’t even know who these people are," please contact your local historical society!

I’m still working through the Bush/Emery/Tullis family photos that I was lucky enough to receive from a house that was sold with all of its contents. While the little girl in this photo is Kathryn Emery Bush, someone had the foresight to write the other names on the back, which makes all the difference.

The other child is Joseph Buckwalter, and the gentleman is B.I. Latshaw. Knowing that a Latshaw lived on Church Street, I plugged his information into my spreadsheet of all the Royersford Borough addresses and found the address for B.I. Studying the garage in the photo and the house in the background, I’m pretty confident I’ve narrowed down the location. What makes this even more exciting is now we have an actual photo of the person who lived in one of our beautiful homes in the borough in 1923. In fact, I believe he built the home years before, circa 1882. I will be comparing this location over the weekend to see if I can definitely tie it in.

This is exactly why preserving and sharing old family photos matters. Sometimes one labeled photo, or even if it's not labeled because we may recognize something, can help tie a piece of local history together.

Also know that we do not have to keep the photos. We can easily scan them into our archives and return them to the family. So keep your eye out, or maybe dig through that closet and see if you have another piece of our history lingering in the back of a photo! (Amy Demchik)

It's been a while since we talked about the Bush family artifacts that I had stumbled upon after attending a yard sale in the borough. Through the kindness of the new homeowner, who purchased the house with all of the contents, so much history was saved.

Although the Bush Brothers are well documented in our museum, the women of that family are not. It's not very often that you are able to have so many photos and information on the line of women who also played a part in our borough story. Soon I will introduce you to Lillian, Kathryn, and Sharyn and their story will become part of our Family History Room.

For now, here are some fantastic photos that show some areas in the borough in the very early 1900's. These could have been lost forever. I am also fortunate enough to have a handful of deeds in which Jacob Mowrey is listed. He was a builder of many of the homes in town, including his own which stood on Main street. Today, only the steps survive. It's one of the biggest architectural losses in town, in my opinion.

Being able to preserve all of this information and artifacts is why it is so important that if you know of a house locally that is getting cleaned out, or you yourself are ready to downsize, please reach out to us at the museum if you have old photos or any items that may help piece together our story. I've been lucky enough to be invited to a number of homes that fall into these categories. Even if there weren't many actual items to take to the museum, I was able to document the older home through pictures. You never know if there may even be something in the background of a photo that solves the mystery of something that we have been trying to figure out! (Amy Demchik)
