Memorial Day Weekend in the United States has long been a time to pause and commemorate the soldiers, sailors, and Marines—and all service members—who fell in the line of duty while serving our nation. It’s a weekend for remembrance, gratitude, and reflection on the sacrifices that made our everyday freedoms possible.

Baseball has been a part of that story for generations—bringing communities together, filling ballparks with families, and creating a shared tradition where we can honor the fallen with moments of silence, ceremonies, and heartfelt appreciation.

As we head into the weekend, we remember those who never came home, we hold their families close, and we commit to carrying their legacy forward with respect and gratitude.

In 1941, Ty Cobb defeated Babe Ruth in a best-of-three charity golf series known as the “Left-Handed, Has-Beens” championship, winning 2–1 with victories in the first and final matches. The event raised money for Golden Rule Farm in New Hampshire and the United Service Organizations.

Cobb was awarded a silver loving cup trophy donated and presented by actress Bette Davis, which he proudly displayed alongside his Hall of Fame plaque. Afterward, Cobb remarked he had finally beaten Ruth at something, while Ruth acknowledged Cobb’s superior putting.

Myths and stereotypes fall away in Ty Cobb: A Terrible Beauty. Author Charles Leerhsen retraces Cobb’s path from Georgia to Detroit—from the shy son of a progressive state senator to America’s first true sports celebrity.

Praised as a “noble [and] convincing” biography (The New York Times Book Review) and “groundbreaking, thorough, and compelling… the most complete, well-researched, and thorough treatment that has ever been written (about Cobb)” (The Tampa Tribune).
