Today is the anniversary of the French attack on Fort Bull in New York. Lieutenant Joseph Gaspard Chaussegros de Lery led a force of French and native allies to attack the British fort located along Wood Creek on March 27, 1756. The storehouses at Fort Bull contained vital weapons, munitions, food and other supplies destined for the beleaguered British garrison at Oswego. Despite a valiant defense by Lieutenant Bull and his troops, the French force overwhelmed the British defenders and Fort Bull was destroyed. The first photo of the Fort Bull monument is by the web page author. The second photo is of the map of Fort Bull drawn by Lieutenant De Lery after the battle.

Quebec House was the childhood home of General James Wolfe, and is located in the village of Westerham in England. The house contains many artifacts, maps, and relics of Wolfe’s time on campaign in North America. The artifacts covering aspects of British operations at Louisburg and Quebec were most interesting. Among the units of Wolfe at Quebec, the 60th Regiment of Foot (Royal Americans) included troops recruited in New York. Photos are by the web page autho

Fort Dobbs was built on the orders of North Carolina Governor Arthur Dobbs early in the French and Indian War. Construction of the new fort on the Carolina frontier began in December of 1755 by Captain Hugh Waddell and his company of North Carolina militia. The fort was built of strong timber and was comprised of three floors. It was garrisoned by a company sized force throughout the French and Indian War. The fort was supplied with an ample stock of muskets, and was also armed with 6-pounder wall mounted swivel guns. During the Anglo-Cherokee War in the Carolinas, Fort Dobbs was attacked by the Cherokees in 1760. North Carolina also has a link to New York during the French and Indian War. Fort Herkimer on the Mohawk River was garrisoned by North Carolina troops in 1756. Photo is by the web page author.

The army of General James Wolfe made amphibious landings at Louisburg in 1758 and Quebec in 1759. British forces utilized landing craft that were specially designed for amphibious operations. This type of landing craft was also armed with a front mounted swivel gun to provide small caliber artillery fire during landings. This period model of a British landing craft is on display at the National Army Museum in London. Photo is by the web page author.

These photos are of the cairn marking the graves of two soldiers from Rogers Rangers located near Granby, Vermont. These Rangers were part of the raid on Saint Francis in 1759. Following “Rogers Rules of Ranging” which directed never to go home the way you originally attacked, these Rangers travelled across extreme Northern Vermont to avoid detection by the French and their native allies. They planned to pick the Connecticut River and return to friendly British territory at Fort Number Four in New Hampshire. The three site photos are by the web page author.
