When you visit our park grounds, we have a lot of California native plants and managing the growth of those plants is important.

In this video, Theresa discussed the western redbud (Cercis occidentalis) on the park grounds of the State Indian Museum and Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park in the context of plant management. She also discussed the importance of plant management and pruning in order to maximize its Native uses in traditional basket making, which you can see examples of when you visit the State Indian Museum.

The 47th annual Honored Elders Day at the State Indian Museum is this coming Saturday, June 6th, from 9am to 4pm!

This annual event is held to recognize the contributions and lived experiences of Native American Elders in our communities. Elders are invited to the State Indian Museum for lunch, gifts, and a cultural dance program. In addition to recognition, California State Parks, the California Indian Heritage Center Foundation (CIHCF), and our event planning partners hope to provide a safe place for families and friends to connect and share joys and memories together.

Native American Elders are encouraged to join! To help ensure a smooth event, please let us know beforehand if you plan to attend this year's event. Early registration helps our planning efforts to provide enough gifts and meals for participating Elders.

Additionally, the governor’s office will present an official proclamation celebrating the contributions of California’s Native people.

Please help spread the word! Family, friends, and the public are all welcome to attend! Registered Elders who check in on the day of the event will receive special gifts of appreciation from the community as well as a catered luncheon.

Pre-registration is HIGHLY encouraged.

Please register by calling the State Indian Museum directly at (916) 324-0971 or by registering online.

May 7th is 𝘽𝙞𝙜 𝘿𝙖𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 across all California nonprofits and we'll be honored if you support the foundation as we get closer to realizing the California Indian Heritage Center. Just two weeks ago, tribal leaders broke ground on Phase 1 - the Welcome Center, which is expected to be completed by this fall.

The Center aims to be a place where all California Natives can “just be," in the words of California Indian Heritage Center Foundation Chairperson Larry Myers. Your support of the foundation empowers Native leaders from across the state to shape the Center to best fit the needs of California’s diverse peoples.

"Now, 175 years into California’s statehood, we can finally say that we are following through on a commitment to honor the First People of this place,” Christina Snider-Ashtari, California’s tribal affairs secretary, said recently.

We appreciate anything to help us make the best California Indian Heritage Center possible. You can give at the link below.
