In 1951, a 13-year-old kid named Hershel Conway moved from a log cabin in the Kentucky mountains to Lynwood, California. His family bought a house in the same town as Barris Kustoms.

Hershel started stopping by the shop on his way home from school. There was a rope keeping bystanders away from the work, but he never bothered the builders. He just stood and watched.

One day he showed up with a set of Mercury skirts he had cut down and welded together to fit his Ford. He approached Sam Barris and asked if he could lead them for him. Sam was impressed by the handiwork and asked if he wanted to work there.

That was Easter 1955. Hershel was 16. George Barris could never remember his name, so he started calling him Junior because he was just a kid.

Junior started by sweeping floors. Sixty hours a week at a dollar an hour. After a while George decided Junior was not worth the salary, so Junior quit and worked at another shop. George asked him back in the summer of 1956. Junior always got paid after that.

He turned out to be quick with a paint gun. In 1957, George was applying Diamond Dust Pearl to the Ala Kart when he came storming out of the booth saying the stuff would not apply evenly. He told Junior to handle it. Junior went in, took the gun, and got a perfect result. From then on, Junior was the house painter at Barris Kustoms.

He later opened Junior's House of Color and went on to paint hundreds of customs, including Clarence Catallo's 1932 Ford 3-Window Coupe, the candy work that became the buried reference for the 2026 Grand National Roadster Show restoration.

The kid who stopped by the shop on the way home from school became one of the great kustom painters of the 1960s.

What is the best story you have about a builder who started young?
