There will be lots to see and do on the Custom House lawn, 192 Main Street Sag Harbor, between 11 am and 4 pm and the Custom House will be open for tours so you can see first hand how a family lived in the late 18th century. CANCELLED Sunday May 24th events in the Old Burying Ground! Weather reports are predicting that it will be “raining cats and dogs” on Sunday, so we are cancelling both events that were to be outdoors in the OBG. We’ll reschedule them for next Spring.

We may have had to cancel our outdoor activities, but our doors are open at the Museum all weekend between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Stop by to see our exhibit “The Revolution at Hand: Clothing, Work and Daily Life in Sag Harbor” and pick up a copy of our recently published book “Sag Harbor in the Revolution”. Two fun ways to spend a rainy day.

Capt. Lester Beebee was a Minuteman during the American Revolution. Last year, with the support of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, the Beebee family headstones, that were nearly destroyed when the steeple of the Whalers’ Church fell on them during the Hurricane of 1938, were restored. However, Lester Beebee’s headstone was so severely damaged, it had to be replaced. Join us at 11:00 a.m., in the Old Burying Ground on Union Street to honor this patriot at the dedication ceremony conducted by the Long Island Chapter of the Sons of the Revolution.

After lunch, return to the Old Burying Ground to participate in a family workshop learning how to clean and preserve the headstones of our colonial ancestors. Thanks to the Gardiner Foundation for their support of all of our 250th anniversary events.

Next Saturday is the beginning of Memorial Day weekend. Our very first event is being co-sponsored with us by Preservation Long Island, the organization that owns and preserves the Custom House. Our “Revolutionary Days” country fair will be held on the Custom House lawn, 192 Main Street Sag Harbor, starting around 11:00 a.m. and going to 4:00 p.m. This will be a day of family fun with Colonial games, crafts, music and food - cooked over an open fire!

You’ll also be able to experience how a family lived in the late 18th century by touring the Custom House. The house was originally built in 1770 and became the first Custom House in New York State when it was acquired by Henry Packer Dering, one of the first U.S. Customs Collectors.

Join us as we launch a season of very special events celebration our Nation’s 250 anniversary as an independent Republic. We hope to see you on the 23rd.
