=========
Probably the worst recent importation is the European corn borer. This pest seriously threatens the country's corn crop. In Europe, it has long been recognized as a most serious pest. In France and Hungary, it frequently destroys from one-half to one-fourth of the corn, millet, hops, and h**p crops.
This destructor was first discovered in the United States in 1917. It had probably been here for several years prior to that time. It is supposed to have been brought in with raw h**p imported from Europe for use in cordage factories along the Mystic River near Boston. It now infests an area of 320 square miles in that vicinity. A second infestation was found in 1919 near Schenectady, New York, where it was presumably introduced in bales of broom corn imported from Austria.
The corn-borer larvae tunnel all parts of the corn plant and almost totally destroy the stalks and ears. Our entomologists have but little hope of getting rid of this pest. The best they can do is to keep it under partial control and prevent its rapid spread. Congress got so stirred up over this pest two years ago that special appropriation of half a million dollars was voted to fight it. The New England states and New York were placed under quarantine and no corn could be shipped out without specially granted permits.

1854, Trees, Plants, and Flowers: Their Beauties, Uses, and Influences

The leaves of H**p are always highly narcotic, a quality which Dr. Lindley thinks is more strongly developed in warm climates; besides which they in such places yield a gum resin, which produces the most remarkable effects.

We created unique interconnected partially graphitic carbon nanosheets (10–30 nm in thickness) with high specific surface area (up to 2287 m2 g–1), significant volume fraction of mesoporosity (up to 58%), and good electrical conductivity (211–226 S m–1) from h**p bast fiber. The nanosheets a...

This is from an article on Kaneh Bosem from the Ancient Hebrew Research Center

The Hebrew word קנה (k’neh, Strong’s #7070) literally means, according to Strong’s and Brown-Driver-Briggs, “reed” or “stalk.” This noun is derived from the root קנה (Q.N.A, Strong’s #7069) meaning “to acquire, purchase or buy.” This verb is derived from the parent root קן (qen, Strong’s #7064) meaning “nest.” The connection between all of these words is a bird’s nest, which is made my “acquiring” branches, leaves or “reeds.”

I have a different take on what this word means, for me when I read these explanations I see fiber (after all everything which goes into building a birds nest could be considered fiber). Which also makes more sense for all the other instances of the word kaneh in the bible. Also makes sense when you think about all words for "vegetable fiber" H**p, Hennep, Chanvre, Ma... and many others, all represent various kinds of vegetable fiber.... not just cannabis.

1934, TOODD

“It is understood that when the plant is cultivated for fiber, it is harvested quite early, generally when the staminate plant begins to flower and before the pistillate plant is fully developed and that the resin containing flowering tops consequently would not be obtainable from a crop harvested for the fiber.”

“No comprehensive survey has been made but it is evident that there are in the aggregate considerable areas devoted to the growth - whether cultivated or wild - of cannabis from which the flowering tops are gathered and sold. The cultivation or growth of cannabis is not controlled by Federal law although many of the States have statutes designed to accomplish this purpose within their respective borders. No statistics on the production of flowering tops for medical purposes or for nonmedical purposes, are available.”

“During the year, some activity on the part of authorities of a few States was noted in the detection and elimination of various areas of growing cannabis. Several patches - exact area not reported - were discovered in and around Denver, Colo. and one patch was found growing wild near the railway tracks near Colorado Springs Coło. Areas were found growing in or near Atlanta, Ga., Jacksonville, Fla., Tulsa, Okla. and a small plot was discovered and destroyed within the city limits of Brooklyn, NY. (picture) In Rhode Island it was reported that the w**d grows wild throughout the State and the State authorities have pursued a campaign toward destruction of this growth while considering measures to prevent reestablishment of the crop. The State authorities of California report destruction of the largest acreage of the w**d during the ma*****na season (July 15 to Sept 1) since the State enforcement agency was established; in the San Joaquin Valley alone approximately 4,000 pounds of the growing plant were torn up and destroyed.”

This paragraph is out of a review of a paper Mar, America's New Drug Problem
1938, Robert P. Walton

It was written by -
Lawrence Kolb, Assistant Surgeon General, Division of Mental Hygiene

We find from further quotations that eight and one-half tons of the w**d were destroyed in one place and sixty-six tons were destroyed in another place, etc. These are doubtless statements of fact, but the reader would be helped in drawing inferences if the author had also told him that each year for a hundred years or more millions of tons of this w**d have sprouted up and died in the United States unnoticed and unsung.

1931 Traffic in O***m and other Dangerous Drugs...

"Few narcotic drug addicts have those qualities necessary for sublimating the tedium of life's routine, like those possessed of good mental health. An approach toward the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts must therefore take into account the mental hygiene factor."

1933 Traffic in O***m and other Dangerous Drugs...

“There is some smuggling of this drug to and from Mexico, also some interstate traffic in the States of the Rocky Mountain region, but not to a great extent. The Canadian authorities have advised of some smuggling of this drug into Canada, especially from Detroit and its vicinity. There has been some unlawful importation of this drug by ship, but since the h**p grows wild to such an extent, it is assumed that the total quantities of this drug clandestinely introduced into the United States from foreign countries cannot be very large.”

This paragraph is from the 1938 Traffic in O***m and other Dangerous Drugs....

pg 61
“The researches undertaken by the laboratories of the Bureau have been directed toward the ultimate development of unimpeachable methods for the qualitative and quantitative testing of the physiological active principle or principles of cannabis, and in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture toward the ultimate development of a strain of industrially useful h**p which would be innocuous from a narcotic standpoint. “

I believe we are still working on the second part of this for Mr Anslinger.....
