Saginaw Railway Museum

Saginaw Railway Museum Founded to preserve, and display to the public, information and artifacts significant to the history of American railroading.

This Historical Society is headquartered in the Saginaw Railway Museum, a restored 1907 Pere Marquette depot that stood in Hemlock, Michigan until it was moved to Saginaw in 1983. There is an HO scale model train display in the basement, operated by the Society. Come see us, either at the Museum or at this site, to learn about trains and railroad technology! We'll show you how they were and now ar

e, along with railroad lore and legends, through our changing display of artifacts, tools, photos, maps, and more.

From the 1830s until the late 1980s, the last car on almost every freight train was the caboose.
The caboose was the train’s office and repair facility, where paper records and spare parts were stored, as well as the cupola, from which crew monitored the train. As the times changed, so did technology, development of the “Flashing Rear End Device” also commonly called the “End Of Train Device” is a small box that as the name suggests, periodically flashes red as the train goes down the tracks, along with communicating to the head end locomotive and giving important data. This device rendered cabooses unnecessary, and most were retired from active service, though some remain on railroads today used as “shove platforms”.

While our friends at the Steam Railroading Institute were running Pere Marquette 1225 on Lake State Railway this past weekend, they also had a rare opportunity to run a freight train with the 1225 up front. On the end of this freight train was their C&O caboose No. 3674. A sister caboose to our own C&O caboose 3577, it was very nice to see the steam engine running on the mainline, but also the caboose at the back!

For the first time since 1950, a Pere Marquette 2-8-4 Berkshire has operated on the former Pere Marquette Railway's (now LSRC) Saginaw Subdivision. Our very Talented friends at the Steam Railroading Institute in partnership with Lake State Railway ran Pere Marquette 1225 from Saginaw, MI. to Flint, MI today.

On July 14th, 1950, the ‘Saginaw News’ covered the last train out of Saginaw, MI. Led by C&O 2694 (Ex-PM 1210) followed by 11 other “Berkshires” that were cold.
“Since the diamond-stack locomotives of Saginaw lumber days, Saginawians have been used to the colorful steam engines on the old Flint & Pere Marquette, the Pere Marquette railways and their successor, Chesapeake & Ohio. Friday [morning] the last 12 steam locomotives here left Saginaw for Plymouth to be used on the C&O's Grand Rapids Division. Use of steam engines for power on the railroad's Saginaw Division has given way entirely to the cleaner, more efficient diesel engines.” -The Saginaw News

Over the past few weeks, we have been working on changing around displays at the museum, and generally trying to spruce things up a little bit. One thing you will notice that has changed, is that the big Steam Locomotive Headlight has been moved from the freight/baggage room to the passenger waiting area.
After sitting in its previous location for many years everything was quite dusty, so one of our members took it upon himself to clean up all the artifacts for its renewed display.
