Introducing a new LMCC weekly feature! ✨ Uncovering the LMCC Archives ✨ Every Friday we will be sharing about an archival item and its' significance to the collection. Today's highlight is the beloved "Miss Brietta" πŸŽ‰

Handmade Black dolls are a significant artistic feature of African American history that has had many iterations over time related to creative expression, utility for children, and complicated commercial caricatures. As a more contemporary craft example in the LMCC archives, β€œMiss Brietta” appears to be a handmade Black folk art cloth doll characteristic of the β€œrag doll” tradition that became popular in the mid-to-late 20th century throughout the Southern and Northeastern United States.

Miss Brietta is a unique work of art for her combined features of hand and machine stitching, her long limbs, layered clothing, and oversized hands and feet detailed with hand-painted nails. The cloth of her skin is stained to reflect a varied depth of color, uniquely complimented by hand stitched wool hair with lightened ends and decorated with bows matching the cloth of her apron.

The cultural significance of similar handmade dolls is complicated--some earlier historical examples were made by Black families for the entertainment of children at a time when commercial representation was limited, while others were produced within a tradition of caricature. By the time period of Miss Brietta’s construction, the Southern folk art tradition of Black doll-making could be considered displays of reclamation and celebration of heritage and craft.

What do you notice and appreciate about Miss Brietta? 🧡

Please join us in wishing a very happy birthday to Barbara Vickers, a true Lincolnville legend! πŸŽ‰She is celebrating 103 incredible years today!

Born and raised in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood, Barbara grew up surrounded by family and faith. She attended St. Benedict the Moor Catholic School and went on to become a state champion basketball player at Excelsior High School.

After graduating in 1942, she answered the call of her country during World War II, working as a tack welder and mechanic at the Boeing company in Seattle, embodying the very spirit of "Rosie the Riveter."

Back home in St. Augustine, Barbara became a fearless civil rights activist. She picketed alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., co-founded the Scott Street Eleven to protect her neighbors from K*K violence, and dedicated decades of her life to justice and community.

Her enduring legacy includes the St. Augustine Foot Soldiers monument, a symbol of unity and courage that stands n the Plaza de la ConstituciΓ³n. She is also a talented creative whose artistic mediums range from oil paintings to doll making.

Happy Birthday, Mrs. Vickers! Thank you for your courage, your service, and your unwavering love for this community. πŸ™βœ¨

The LMCC was happy to accompany Myrna Clayton and her Band to the St. Augustine High School for an exclusive workshop.

The workshop began with the students of the Jazz Band playing β€œSt. Lou’s Blues”. Clayton and the band members then shared positive feedback along with why improvisation is so important to jazz. 🎷πŸ₯πŸŽΊπŸŽΉ

The LMCC wants to thank for sponsoring this workshop with the Tommy Bledsoe Grant.
