Museum founder Otto Lightner acquired much of his collection during his years as a publisher in Chicago, including this painting of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. Featured in our exhibition, The Gilded Age: Treasures from the Lightner Museum, this 1918 painting by William Clusmann adopts the bright palette and broken brushwork of Impressionism to perfectly capture the prosperity and optimism of pre-Depression Chicago. Clusmann shows a city humming with life, as figures, cars, and buses move through the streets, and high-rise buildings stretch to the sky.

Today is International Museum Day. Established in 1948 by Otto C. Lightner, the museum is housed within the former Hotel Alcazar—a grand Gilded Age resort commissioned by Standard Oil executive Henry Flagler. Designed by the architecture firm of Carrère and Hastings, the magnificent Spanish Renaissance Revival building remains a significant part of the city’s rich heritage.

Inside, you’ll find an eclectic collection ranging from ornate Gilded Age furniture to vintage typewriters and whimsical curiosities. Alongside these permanent displays, a dynamic selection of changing exhibitions ensures there is always something new to discover.

The Lightner Museum is open 7 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with our last admission at 4:00 p.m.

Opening on June 5, Alex Devereux: The American Traveler is the next exhibition in our 2026 Lightner Local series.

The American Traveler is a meditation on the restless spirit of exploration that defines the American experience. From the mythology of the open road to the enduring allure of Route 66, travel functions as both a literal journey and a powerful symbol of the American Dream. Devereux explores this ethos through iconic imagery: cars idling beneath neon signs, train tracks fading into distant horizons, and roadside architecture poised between past prosperity and present decline.

The opening reception for Alex Devereux: The American Traveler will take place on Friday, June 5 from 5:30-7:30pm, during St. Augustine’s First Friday Art Walk.
