Today we remember Deputy Mike Seversen, a man whose courage, resilience, and unwavering spirit left a lasting mark on Polk County and far beyond.

In 1991, while assisting Burnett County, Deputy Seversen and Burnett County Deputy Allen Albee confronted an armed suspect who had already been involved in a shooting in Minnesota. The suspect opened fire, killing Deputy Albee and striking Deputy Seversen in the spine. Though the injuries left Mike a quadriplegic, he survived — and he lived the rest of his life with extraordinary strength, faith, and purpose.

Mike relied on his faith, family, and friends to navigate the most difficult of circumstances. His positive attitude inspired everyone who met him. He became a remarkable ambassador for law enforcement, always encouraging others to pursue careers in public service. His legacy continues through the Mike Seversen Scholarship Fund, which supports future generations in his honor.

The statue at the front entrance of the Justice Center — a project Mike championed — stands as a permanent tribute to law enforcement in Polk County. A bench at the overlook in St. Croix Falls also bears his name, a reminder of the deep connection Mike and his family had with the community.

Despite his injury, Mike never allowed limitations to define him. He remained active, visible, and engaged. He was a steadfast supporter of first responders, nurses, and public safety professionals. His presence lifted others, and his outlook reminded us all what true resilience looks like.

Deputy Seversen’s legacy is one of service, courage, and hope. We honor him today and every day.

Deputy Mike Seversen, End of Watch April 14th, 2014.

The St. Croix Falls Historical Society is happy to add Melissa Ward to our board! She is joining current board members Maureen Yunker, Jennifer Torgerson, Robert Tabern, Joel West and Shaila Johnson.

A few words from Melissa herself “As a mom of four (nearly) grown children, I’m hopeful that my love of antiques, photography and community might all prove to be helpful with the St. Croix Falls Historical Society. Brad and I were both born and raised here and live on a farm outside of Dresser with all kinds of animals—cows, horses, chickens, ducks, dogs and a cat. Over the years I’ve worked in local schools, a local dental office, and as a Creative Memories consultant for 30+ years. I dabble in painting houses from time to time, as well. In the spring, summer, and fall my happy place is at our tiny family cabin on the east end of Deer Lake.”

Welcome Melissa!

Diving Bell
Deer Lake c 1935

In the notes found regarding these photos Conrad Leighton describes a DIY diving bell project built by his father Frederick Leighton, uncle James Leighton, and cousins around 1935 on Deer Lake in the area now locally named “Riegel’s Bay.”
Conrad notes the Inspiration for the project was driven by boredom and a love for "physical challenges," the group built the diving bell from scratch during their summers at Deer Lake.
While the bell "worked sort of," it required users to be strong swimmers, and the air supply was a known issue.
Conrad discovered the project through a collection of negatives given to him by Dolores Riegel. Her husband Fred Riegel appears in the photos. Conrad’s grandfather Stanley was married to Winifred (Baker) Leighton.

Our Society was thrilled to bring back Bill Jamerson who brings history alive with his singing and story telling to the 4th graders at SCF Elementary. This is the 2nd year that we have brought the history of lumberjacks on the St. Croix River to the class, and we hope to keep this tradition going!

Thank you to our members and those who donate to our society to make this possible! ❤️❤️
