It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of one of our beloved board members. On May 12, 2025, James W. Mitchell took the one way ticket to meet his beloved maker and heavenly father. With 30 years as a former master architect, James was instrumental in building many projects for our museum, most on his own time and dime. He dedicated his passion with railroads to our little piece of history, and to preserving the story we tell. It was often a second home for him, and many visitors were able to catch him working on a project, where he would take the time to entertain them with his stories and knowledge, matched with his down home wit and humor. To those of us left, James was a steadfast friend, a dedicated family man, a passionate worker, and a dreamer. Many of his ideas for the future of the museum we would call "Pie in the Sky", but every one of us couldn't help but be inspired by his gumption to take it on. With his passing, we will honor his life by continuing the work that he started on the depot. He is now enjoying that pie in the sky, and we hope to make the dreams he had while on this earth come to fruition. There not one person that "Mitch" didn't impact in a positive way, he was truly one of the better angels of our nature.
Anyone is welcome to come buy and see his handiwork during our open hours, and to leave memories of a friend we will miss dearly. Thank you.

Thanks for the nice comment on Abandoned Rails, Laurence: "I went to visit the depot in Saint Joe last Saturday (my third visit). What they have done with the place is incredible. Stop by if you can and support them. James knows just about everything there is to know about this railway and is more than happy to spend as much time as you would like discussing it. Hundreds of wonderful pictures and artifacts! Well worth your time."

We are trying to guess what year this picture was taken. The last passenger train ran on September 7, 1946. The woman’s pants fashion statement tells a lot about the age of the picture. Take a guess we’d love to hear from you. If you can identify the people in the picture even better.
