Milton Tootle Jr. was more than a prominent name in St. Joseph—he was a driving force behind the city’s rise as a regional powerhouse of industry and finance.
This AI‑colorized photograph shows Milton Jr. relaxing on the porch of his family’s summer home on Mackinac Island, Michigan, a peaceful contrast to the fast‑paced world he helped shape back in St. Joseph.
As a leader in the Tootle family enterprises, Milton Jr. played a key role in expanding the city’s wholesale trade network, strengthening its banking institutions, and guiding St. Joseph into the 20th century with vision and determination. His work with the Tootle‑Lemon Bank and other ventures helped establish the financial stability that fueled the city’s growth during its “Golden Age.”
From boardrooms to breezy summer porches, Milton Tootle Jr.’s influence reached far beyond business—his legacy continues to echo through the history of the Wyeth‑Tootle Mansion and the community he helped build.

This Memorial Day, the Wyeth‑Tootle Mansion pauses to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.
Their sacrifice is woven into the history of every community—including our own.
The photograph shown here is an AI‑colorized image of Milton Tootle III, seated on the steps of the Mansion shortly before leaving to serve in World War II. Like so many young Americans of his generation, he stepped forward during a time of global uncertainty, carrying with him the hopes of his family and his hometown.
Today, we remember all who served and never returned home.
As we reflect, we extend our deepest gratitude to the families who have borne the weight of loss and to all who continue to serve.
We remember. We honor. We thank you.

The Wyeth-Tootle Mansion is moving into an exciting new chapter as our America 250 renovations continue—and one major milestone is almost complete.
The “HiStory” portion of our HiStory • HerStory • OurStory renovation theme is nearly finished with the opening of the Men’s Salon. Closed off for decades, this remarkable room has now been fully restored and reimagined for both history lovers and wedding parties alike.
Once housing servant rooms, the New Men’s Salon now features exhibits highlighting the men of industry who helped shape St. Joseph—their innovations, their influence, and their lasting impact on our community.
But that’s not all.
This beautifully restored room also doubles as a brand‑new Groom’s Suite for weddings at the Mansion. Complete with comfortable sitting areas, games, and a bar, it offers a stylish, relaxed space for wedding parties to enjoy before the celebration begins.
As we prepare for America 250, we’re proud to bring these long-hidden rooms back to life—honoring the past while creating meaningful new uses for the future.

It’s officially picnic season in St. Joseph — and it has us thinking back to summers enjoyed by the Tootle family more than a century ago.
These AI‑colorized and restored photographs capture the Tootles spending a sunny day at their summer home on Mackinac Island, Michigan. From relaxed outdoor gatherings to breezy afternoons overlooking Lake Huron, the family embraced the same simple joys we still look forward to today: good weather, good company, and time spent outside.
As we welcome warmer days here at the Wyeth‑Tootle Mansion, we’re reminded that history isn’t only found in grand rooms and formal portraits — it’s also in the everyday moments of leisure, laughter, and family traditions.
Whether you’re planning a picnic, a walk through the park, or a quiet afternoon on the porch, we hope your summer days are as bright as the ones the Tootles enjoyed long ago.
