Gallery 13 represents national and international, emerging, and mid-career, , contemporary artists with a sincere heart for the work of contemporary American, Upper, Midwest artists. The gallery was founded in 2005 in Minneapolis, Minnesota by curators and artists Karen and Stephen Sugarman. The industrial-chic gallery in Minneapolis quickly gained status as a center for groundbreaking sculptural

and 2D exhibitions. The Sugarman’s reputation grew as curators “who are among the best at encouraging and finding new talents from increasingly diverse backgrounds” (Minnesota Monthly). Over the years the Sugarman’s expanded the gallery into larger spaces, ventured into multi-dimensional exhibitions that included art, music, and sculpture exhibitions that dove into the birth of cutting-edge digital and computerized art and art experiences. In 2019 Karen and Stephen took the next step in the future of art and moved the gallery to digital platforms such as Artsy, Instagram, Exhibbit, Linkedin, Opensea, Raible, and soon to Kunstmatrix

Nord Fauna
This illustration honors the rise of fauna, with a focus on the diverse wildlife of the
Northwoods of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Resting within the oak branches contain a
whitetail deer skull, echoing the presence and passage of one of the region’s most
iconic mammals; a tree frog, toad, and salamander, creatures of moisture and
shadow, whose ancient lineages speak to the resilience of amphibians; and
numerous butterflies, delicate yet vital, fluttering through the composition as
pollinators and symbols of transformation. Together, these forms reflect the
enduring connection between animal life and the land.

Fungi Cardiovascular
The work depicts fungi and mushrooms growing from a twisted branch, their
mycelial networks weaving like veins and arteries, mimicking the cardiovascular
system. The mushrooms emerge like vital organs, emphasizing their deep
connection to life itself. As some of the oldest life forms, fungi were among the first
to colonize land, breaking down rock into soil and shaping Earth’s earliest
ecosystems. They sustain life through decomposition and symbiosis, essential in the role of life. This piece highlights fungi’s profound influence on the evolution of all
living things.

Elemental Genesis
This illustration reflects the elemental origins of life, composed as the mirrored side
of a double helix. This represents the cosmic ingredients that make life on Earth
possible. Hydrogen, forged in the birth of the universe; carbon, oxygen, nitrogen,
and other life essential elements born in the hearts of stars and scattered across
galaxies through supernovae. These elements, carried across space and time,
eventually coalesced on Earth to form the building blocks of DNA, cells, and all
living things. The composition bridges the micro and the cosmic, showing that life is
not separate from the universe, but a direct extension of it.
