October 22 is the feast day of St. John Paul II, the patron saint of World Youth Day, and in many ways, the patron saint of my youth:-) St. John Paul the Great, pray for us!

October 18 is the feast day of St. Luke, (the Evangelist, 1st century AD) who is the patron of Physicians and Surgeons, and in a somewhat more obscure tradition, the patron saint of artists. St. Luke, pray for us!

October 16 is the feast day of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque .(1647-1690) She is the patron saint of those suffering with polio, devotees of the Sacred Heart, and loss of parents. St. Margaret Mary, pray for us!

October 15 is the feast day of St. Teresa of Avila, (1515-1582) the patron saint of chess players, lace makers, and headache sufferers. St. Teresa of Avila, pray for us!

October 12 was the feast day of Saint Carlo Acutis, (1991-2006) who was canonized by Pope Leo XIV on September 5, 2025. He is the first Millennial saint, the patron saint of computer programmers and of youth. St. Carlo Acutis, pray for us!

Two more glimpses of my current project that will be 560 square feet in total on four walls and include 24 standing portraits of saints. I finished number 15 this evening and 5 others are in progress. Getting close to the finish line!

October 9 is the feast day of St. John Henry Newman, (1801-1890) an English theologian and mid-life convert to Catholicism, later becoming a priest and a cardinal. In the United States, he is known as the patron of the “Newman Centers” at secular colleges. St. John Henry Newman, pray for us!

BLESSED GERARD IN JERUSALEM

The busy hospital scene of Blessed Gerard in Jerusalem depicts members of the Order of St. John caring for the poor, the sick, the needy – truly anyone who came for help. The Order of St. John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, or Order of Malta, is a worldwide, lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church founded in the late 11th century by the Benedictine lay brother, Blessed Gerard. (1040-1120) The order carries out its charitable works “for the sick, the needy and refugees without distinction of religion, race, origin or age.” A recently excavated 12th century hospital of the Order of St. John in Jerusalem is the basis for the architecture and this historic structure is due south of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The 12th century silhouette of that church can be seen through the large window arch in the painting.
