Our annual Spring Salon Student Juried Exhibition is back—a campus favorite showcasing the incredible work of students from across academic disciplines who took art courses this year. Big thanks to LWG staff for the installation, and to guest juror Cameron Patricia Downey for celebrating their creativity with us! Open through Sunday, April 20.

Thanks to all that have swung by LWG in last last few weeks! Today, Sunday 03.16.25, is the final opportunity to see our collection highlights show, The Hits. Don’t miss recent gifts of work by alums Siah Armanjani and Cynthia Brewster, as well as three by Judith Roode and an installation from Mickey Smith’s Morphologies exhibition. This has been a fun project, a short run before a trio of curricular student exhibitions round out the academic year! Macalester is closed for spring break, but use the doorbell on the NE corner of the building to access the gallery between 11 am - 4 pm today. 🖼️

A few more closing posts to come, but I want to take a moment to applaud Mickey for her extraordinary conceptual vision and exquisite work.  𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 showcased four long-form series that seamlessly blur the lines between documentary and fine art photography, celebrating her ability to transform bound periodicals and library collections into monumental works of art.  
  
Over the past two years, Mickey and I—alongside the dedicated LWG student staff and our DeWitt Wallace Library colleagues—have deeply enjoyed collaborating to bring this project to life. Mickey’s ongoing residency at Mac and subsequent relationships allowed us to draw attention to the quiet, critical labor of librarians, whose work is so integral in shaping the human experience within these essential institutions.  
  
One of the many powers of art is its ability to provide respite in a challenging and heartbreaking world. I’m 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕣𝕥𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕕 that 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴 offered moments of pause for our visitors. Through simple yet evocative beauty—of color, form, light, scale, text, and texture—the exhibition provided a peaceful yet intellectually compelling aesthetic experience. Especially if you took a walk on the books of 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮 𝘝𝘰𝘭. 𝘐!  
 
Mickey—thank you for your generosity, vision, and regular travel between Mni Sóta Makoce and Aotearoa in order to make all of this happen. It’s been an honor to organize your largest-to-date US exhibition here in MSP, to publish the first in-depth scholarship on your twenty+ years of work, and to witness its resonance with students, faculty, staff, and visitors over the past four months. I can’t wait to experience it again, at Fargo’s Plains Art Museum in January followed by the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery + Fiendish Plots in Lincoln NE next fall!

Minnesnowta is doing her thing, but LWG is warm and cozy. We’re open 11-4 today and tomorrow, for the finale of Mickey Smith: Morphologies. C’mon by and select some books from Platform I to take home with you—if you have a book lover in your life, we suggest choosing several meaningful titles and giving the gift of artwork! The Morphologies catalog is also available in the gallery, another great gift for book and library aficionados. 📚❄️🎁
