The wonderful Esther Callahan and her work highlighted! Yes, indeed, Esther will teach “Critiquing Racism in Art” this fall! We’re so excited and honored to have such an outstanding art activist at METRO. Esther also curated an exhibition with Eyenga Bokamba at the Gordon Parks Gallery in spring of 2026.

JOIN US for the OPENING RECEPTION of "Farewell Tour: Sculptural Work by Erica Spitzer Rasmussen,” a major retrospective of noted international artist and educator.

Exhibition runs April 25 – June 25, 2026
ARTIST’S TALK: May 23, 2026 at 1:00pm

Saint Paul, Minnesota—Metro State University and the Gordon Parks Gallery are proud to present a major retrospective exhibition of the sculptural work of acclaimed artist Erica Spitzer Rasmussen, honoring nearly three decades of rigorous studio practice, transformative teaching, and visionary institutional leadership.

A noted artist with local, national, and international recognition, Rasmussen is celebrated for work that seamlessly merges the exquisitely handmade with contemporary conceptual approaches. This exhibition offers a comprehensive view of her sculptural practice, foregrounding the material intelligence, technical mastery, and poetic sensibility that have defined her career.

The exhibition features Rasmussen’s signature paper sculptures, including her striking shoe forms and boldly constructed neckwear, alongside garment-based works such as capes, jackets, and bustiers that evoke the body while functioning as autonomous sculptural objects. Also included are her handmade books—intimate works that function as a homage to family, memory, and the rituals of care. In a significant new development within her practice, the exhibition premieres collaborative video projects that demonstrate how her books are dimensional, kinetic objects.

This retrospective also celebrates Rasmussen’s 29-year tenure at Metro State University, where she has shaped generations of artists and provided essential leadership as Director of the Gordon Parks Gallery, advancing its mission as a vital site for contemporary art, critical dialogue, and community engagement.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Metro State University has launched the Erica Spitzer Rasmussen Endowed Scholarship for Studio Arts, with a goal of raising $25,000 to support future students. This endowment honors Rasmussen’s enduring commitment to access, mentorship, and artistic excellence.

To contribute to the scholarship, please give online at: www.metrostate.edu/give
Select “Erica Spitzer Rasmussen Scholarship for Studio Arts” in the gift designation drop-down menu.

This exhibition stands as both a scholarly and celebratory moment—recognizing Rasmussen’s profound impact as an artist, educator, and cultural leader, and affirming the lasting influence of her work within the Twin Cities arts community and beyond.

"Favorable Conditions" opening reception on January 29, 2026, is postponed.

We want to share that the exhibition opening reception for "Favorable Conditions" will be postponed.

While we were deeply looking forward to gathering in community around this powerful body of work, we believe in moving with intention, care, and alignment. Taking this pause allows us to ensure the exhibition receives the space, attention, and energy it truly deserves.

Art asks us to be present, responsive, and thoughtful—and this decision reflects those same values. We remain incredibly excited to share this work with you and will announce new dates for events soon.

Thank you for your patience, your understanding, and your continued support of artists and cultural spaces.

The Gordon Parks Gallery will be open it's regular hours to see "Favorable Conditions." The artist talk scheduled for February 7, 2026, will be changed to virtual.

Minnesota is where Gordon Parks bought his first camera—his chosen "weapon" against poverty and racism. This week, a memorial to the legendary photographer, director, musician, and author is one step closer to reality in St. Paul.

State lawmakers have secured $250,000 to commemorate Parks in St. Paul. On Sunday, Nov. 30, Sen. Foung Hawj (DFL-St. Paul) and Rep. Samakab Hussein (DFL-St. Paul) celebrated the legacy of Gordon Parks alongside Dr. Robin Hickman-Winfield, executive producer and CEO of SoulTouch Productions and Parks's grandniece; Amy Mino, executive director of the Minnesota Landmark Center; and other community members and legislative leaders. The 2025 Legacy bill included funds to create a living memorial to Parks, whose career began in St. Paul.
