“The things that the flag stands for were created by the experiences of a great people. Everything that it stands for was written by their lives. The flag is the embodiment, not of sentiment, but of history.” — Woodrow Wilson

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”

President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day.

Join us for We the People: Then and Now as facilitator Kate Knutson guides us through the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, the U.S. Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. Through conversation, small-group discussion, and interactive activities, we will explore how these founding documents came to be, and the questions they continue to raise today.

Mary Etta Kasten (née Grunst) stands behind the soda and ice cream counter of the Wyland Drug Store in Nicollet in the mid-1950s. The store, owned by Hal Wylund, faced north on Third Street and was next door to Nicollet State Bank.
