The James Museum’s extensive collection of works by Edward S. Curtis provides exciting opportunities to make connections between people in the portraits and their living descendants.

Lakota elder Duane Hollow Horn Bear is a descendant of the Hollow Horn Bear (Matȟó Héȟloǧeča) photographed by Curtis in 1907 (Duane’s grandfather was Hollow Horn Bear’s oldest son). This legacy is very meaningful and impactful for him. Duane has successfully had two of Hollow Horn Bear’s original pipes repatriated—one of which has an association with the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He has also had two of his ancestor’s beaded hide shirts returned home to the family from museums both in the United States and abroad.

“Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna)” is an award-winning puzzle platformer that follows the epic journey of an Iñupiaq girl named Nuna and her companion Fox as they try to save their home from an eternal blizzard.
 
Developed by E-Line Media in collaboration with the Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC), the game celebrates and shares Alaska Native culture with a large audience.

Today we had a special visitor all the way from Ohio, artist Felicia Tinker! 🪡 Her quilt depicting Robert Lemmons (c. 1848-1947), a man who rose from enslavement to become known as one of the best horse tamers of all time, is on view in the Frontier gallery.

Take advantage of our free admission on Juneteenth to come in and appreciate the mosaic of fabrics and patterns used to create it in person!

This striking photo, captured thanks to a camera trap, shows a Yellowstone wolf known as Mr. Blue (named for his steely blue-gray coat) moving in to take advantage of an easy meal. The drowned bison had previously also fed a grizzly bear for several days.

And the winner is…🌈

This year, we’re honored to have the winners of OUT Arts & Culture’s ArtOUT exhibition on display here at the museum!

🎨 ArtOUT is an annual juried exhibition celebrating visual art through an LGBTQ+ lens. Each year, artists share their perspectives on identity, belonging, and pride through painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media.

The rest of the exhibition is hosted at the Gulfport Public Library.

You can see these pieces on display on the first floor in our museum shop now through the end of June. Museum admission is not required.

New in the galleries: a display case showcasing Pueblo pottery.

The 19 Pueblo Indian tribes of New Mexico have a rich pottery tradition instilled by family, geography, and cultural practice.

The Pueblo pottery on view in our Native Life gallery has been made by hand in recent decades with collectors and tourists in mind. Though these vessels look different from each other, Pueblo potters traditionally use similar methods of creation utilizing natural elements of land, water and fire. 🪨 💧 🔥
