Happy birthday to the father of the skyscraper- Louis Sullivan!

This rare, decorative staircase is one of the few remaining artifacts from the legendary Chicago Stock Exchange, designed by the firm of Adler and Sullivan and completed in 1894. The commercial structure was a landmark of American architecture in both design and construction. In the wake of the Great Chicago Fire, the 13-story Exchange was an early example of the American skyscraper, built of fireproof metal and terra cotta. In terms of design, all elements of the Exchange – from stone, terra cotta, and glass to murals and metalwork – were adorned with Louis Sullivan’s unique, luxurious ornament.

Leader of the Prairie School and mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright, Sullivan coined the famous architectural saying “Form follows function.” He advocated an organic architecture, with form determined by function, site, and materials, with ornament that expressed the structure and “soul” of a building. His nature-inspired designs are reminiscent of the stylized forms of Art Nouveau and Celtic art, but structured within a tight geometric framework. Each element of this staircase is ornamented, carrying forward Sullivan’s harmonious decorative scheme for the Exchange.

📸Celebrate World Photography day by taking in MAACM’s newest exhibition, "Faces of Inequality: Depression-Era Photography".

This focused exhibition brings together thirty photographs by Dorothea Lange, Eudora Welty, Marion Post Wolcott, Ben Shahn, Walker Evans, and others, exploring the many ways documentary photographers interpreted American life during one of the nation's most difficult eras.

✨The newest addition to MAACM’s 2nd floor Collectors Gallery, Frank H. Desch’s "The Blueberry Pickers", captures the quiet beauty of everyday American life through a luminous, light-filled style.

Women and children gather blueberries beneath the summer sun, transformed by Desch’s loose brushwork, radiant natural light, and delicate sense of atmosphere. Trained under William Merritt Chase and later associated with the influential Provincetown art colony, Desch became known for graceful outdoor scenes depicting women and children at leisure.

"The Blueberry Pickers" beautifully reflects the spirit of American Impressionism, elevating a simple rural activity into a serene and timeless image. This exceptional painting is now on view as the newest highlight of MAACM’s growing collection of American Fine Arts.
