On this day, we honor and remember seafarers lost at sea, and their families.
In a powerful norâeaster on April 26, 1717, the Whydah Galley was destroyed off the coast of Massachusetts, and more than 100 sailors lost their lives.
For many aboard the Whydah, piracy offered a chance at a different lifeâone with greater equity, shared decision-making, and a voice regardless of background. They were not so different from mariners across history. For centuriesâand even todayâpeople go to sea to provide for themselves and their families, in search of adventure, and to forge their own path. In our modern era, the risks remain high.
Today, we honor the sailors who went down with the Whydahâand all mariners whose lives have been lost to the sea. In their memory, a portion of todayâs ticket proceeds will be donated to the Salem Marine Society.
