The House of the Seven Gables #1 Historical Home Tour in the U.S. by Newsweek | Museum and Settlement House
(2609)

In 1668, merchant and ship-owner John Turner built a house on Salem Harbor destined to become one of America’s most beloved historic homes. Designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2007, The House of the Seven Gables is best known today as the inspiration for world-renowned American author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel. In 1910, Salem activist and philanthropist Caroline Emmerton restored the house and opened it as a museum and Settlement House to support the local immigrant community. Over a century later, The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association carries on Emmerton’s mission and vision by offering free English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes and providing a platform for immigrant voices on the North Shore. Enjoy public programs and events, embark on tours of our historic mansion, and relax on our seaside lawn and gardens today!

This past summer, the Massachusetts Legislature passed the PROTECT Act—a wide-ranging law that provides additional protections for our immigrant communities and limits state and local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE.

Through our work with MIRA: Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, Inc., The House of the Seven Gables was proud to play a part in securing passage of this important legislation.

This Saturday, a new character joins us for Hawthorne’s Halloween Bash! Meet the Maiden of Merry Mount. 💐

In “The May-Pole of Merry Mount” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edith celebrates her marriage to her husband Edgar. They dance around a may-pole like forest creatures until their festivities are interrupted by the arrival of John Endicott and his Puritan followers.

At The Bash, you can find Edith crafting custom wands. Find her and take home a wand of your own!
