Happy Flashback Friday! For the final Friday in May, we thought we’d share one more mother who once called Deepwood home—Alice Bingham Powell! Alice was the daughter of George and Willie Bingham, the second owners of the home. Alice grew up in the home, and was even married in the Front Parlor in 1915 to a man named Keith Powell.

Keith and Alice had two sons, George Bingham “Bing” Powell, and Robert Keith Powell. Here we have a lovely photograph of Alice with Bing as a baby.

Thank you to everyone who played yesterday’s round of What is it Wednesday! The object that we shared was a vintage hat stand made of metal wires with a spring mechanism. This hat stand features a string that allows you to pull the top portion that holds the hat forward for easy access.

This type of stand was often found in hat shops, and has a base that can slip onto a shelf to hold it in place. Some variations of this stand were made with velvet covering the wire.

Check back next week for another !

Happy Teacup Tuesday! Today we have a pretty cup stamped with “Heirloom Fine Bone China, Made in England.”

While we don’t have much information on this backstamp and who might have manufactured the teacup, we do know that the cup is waisted with a flared and fluted rim, and the saucer is also fluted.

Happy Flashback Friday! This week we are revisiting a photograph of another mother of Deepwood—Alice “Alla” Bretherton Brown Powell. This photo was taken in 1914 and shows Alla with her two sons, Werner and Chandler on the porch of their vacation home at Seal Rock. Alla, her husband Clifford, and their two boys moved into the Queen Anne home in 1925 (after a year of renovations) and were the last family to own the house.

Werner and Chandler’s favorite bedtime story was “The Hollow Tree and Deepwoods Book” by Albert Bigelow Paine. Alla would read the boys a few pages of this book each night before bed when they were growing up. This treasured book is what inspired Alla to name the home “Deepwood”!
