This October, we have a couple of spooktacular events we hope you won’t miss:

Tomorrow (Friday, October 16th) from 5pm-8:30pm: Our Halloween-themed pop-up “Boo-tique” in the Solarium off of the Victorian Home’s Front Porch! Shop for spooky Tussie-Mussies filled with goodies, cute keychains, magnets, bookmarks, Halloween artwork, home décor, special jam packs, and much more!

There is no admission to check out the “Boo-tique!”

A portion of all proceeds benefits the care, preservation, and programs of Deepwood Museum & Gardens.

Saturday, October 31st, 3-6pm: Trick or Treat at Deepwood!

Bring the family to the Front Porch of the Victorian home any time between 3 and 6pm on Saturday, October 31st for the chance to receive a pumpkin sugar cookie generously provided by Roth’s Fresh Markets, as well as candy courtesy of our community sponsors:

--South Salem Ace Hardware
--The Gatti Law Firm
--Furbish
--The Grand Hotel

While supplies last!

We will also have storytelling, fun lawn games, and the Solarium will be decorated so that you can get some photos on your phone or camera! Plus, take the chance to see the first floor of the Victorian home!

This event is made possible through City of Salem TOT Funding. Free to the public, all ages welcome. No need to pre-register!

**ATTENTION** Our ticketing website, Universe, is experiencing some technical difficulties this morning, and is showing any and all events as sold out. We have reached out to their tech support to get this issue resolved ASAP.

Tickets are still available for our last History Talk of 2026: History & Artistry of Victorian Hairwork in 19th-Century America Talk, happening on Saturday, October 24th from 3-4pm!

Come to this History Talk as historian and hairwork artist Diane Irby offers insight into the intricate and deeply sentimental art of transforming human hair into lasting keepsakes. This engaging presentation explores the history of Victorian hairwork and its significance within nineteenth-century American culture. The presentation examines the diverse techniques used to create hairwork, traces the rise and eventual decline of the practice, and highlights the important role it played in the lives of women during the Victorian era, offering opportunities for creative expression, artistic accomplishment, and personal agency within the social conventions of the nineteenth century.

Tickets are $15 each; Current Deepwood Members receive free admission (current Deepwood members only, discount does not apply to non-member guests). Pre-registration is required for all guests. Purchase tickets by calling our office at 503-363-1825.

Thank you to everyone who played yesterday’s What is it Wednesday! The picture we shared was a close-up of an antique Underwood typewriter. A typewriter is a mechanical device featuring a set of keys each assigned an individual letter, producing text on paper by striking an inked ribbon against the paper.

Various inventors worked on a kind of typing instrument over the years as far back as the 1500s. In 1867, Christopher Latham Sholes of Milwaukee invented the first practical typewriter. By the mid-1870s, typewriters became widely available to the public.

Over the years typewriters became more advanced, and the first electric typewriters hit the market in the latter half of the 1900s. By the 1990s, however, typewriters started being widely replaced with computers and word-processing software.

Mason Creek Designs will be there with candles, soaps, and other handmade items, and Molly Ferder will have handmade wreaths for sale!

Plus, there will be holiday and home décor, candles, our signature tea, cards, chocolates, pottery, jams and jellies, and much more!

Want the chance to check out our Holiday Market and shop before we open to the general public? Come to our Holiday Market Preview Evening on Friday, November 13th! Enjoy nibbles and hot beverages while you shop. Ticketed timeslots are available from 5-6pm and 6-7pm. You can come anytime within the hour of your ticketed timeslot.

Tickets for the Preview Night are $7 each. Current Deepwood members receive free admission. Purchase your ticketed timeslot on our website (link in bio).

Take a museum home tour Wed-Sat at 9am, 10am, 11am, and Noon through October to see Deepwood’s mourning exhibit on display throughout the home. View a collection of dresses, shawls, and accessories that Victorians wore when in mourning.

A maximum of 8 people per tour is permitted. We highly recommend calling ahead of time at 503.363.1825 to reserve a space on your preferred tour time slot.
