“I’m fascinated by machine-made things, but what I think we need now is handmade work. I’ve probably spent 65,000 hours watching TV. We all need to take a break, slow down, be aware of our bodies, our spaces, and look at things carefully. The screens we all watch are exhausting; they say, ‘Let this rectangle take me to this other place.’ Hopefully these paintings will remind people to be aware of the now and enjoy how rich and wonderful life is.”

“Roland Thompson breathes color into minimalism with exceptionally crafted painted aluminum works. The paintings are non-pictorial — no image, no story attached.”
- Gina Cavallo in Artists of Utah / 15 Bytes ✍

What was minimalism?

In the 1950s, painter Frank Stella, among others, sought a new mode of artmaking that alleviated art from the assignment of having to ‘represent’ something or function like a window into another world.

By employing a regulated pattern corresponding with the shapes of his large-scale canvases, Stella banished the illusion of 3D space “at constant intervals”— in pursuit of a perfect 2D surface whilst emphasizing the ‘object’ status of paintings.

A main goal of the minimalist movement was to streamline viewers’ experiences of art. The point was not to “interpret” the art, as one would interpret words on a page—but simply to allow the art to affect you.

Like Stella, Roland Thompson’s custom-cut aluminum honeycomb pieces feature painted patterns which correspond with their unique shapes. Thompson injects this practice with bold, nostalgic colors, textures, and manufactured anomolies (or ‘blips’) that complicate the visual rhythm and add playful touches of movement or human intervention.

Emily Echo Emi, acrylic on aluminum, 40x30 in.
Cassandra Reconsiders, acrylic and pastel on aluminum, 40x30 in.
