We started something a little different this Fall Speaker Series. Before the Star of the Show, I mean the speaker, we will have at least one Fort Concho staff member give an update on projects they are working on.

This week we have our very own Curator of History, Cory, giving the crowd a sneak peak of what he has been working on behind the scenes.
Let me tell you…it was amazing!!! You just had to be there! 😅

Did you know that today is World Letter Writing Day? 🖋

What better way to recognize the day than by reading a letter written by Alice Grierson (wife to Commander of the 10th Cav., Benjamin Grierson) to her son Charlie in 1878? Although the letter begins on a happy note, Alice eventually shares the heartbreaking news of Edith’s death.

As the anniversary of Edith’s passing on September 9 approaches, this letter offers a personal glimpse into the Grierson family’s love, grief, and loss.

Apparently, Sgt. Bob is a Viking now. ⚔️

Two of our past Fort Concho visitors, Kent and Denise, purchased a Sgt. Bob (sticker) from the Sutler Store a while back, and took him on a 35-day cruise, “The Voyage of the Vikings”!!!

While the rest of us were here working, Sgt. Bob was off exploring Iceland, Greenland, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Prince Christian Sound, and Newfoundland.
Must be nice, Bob. 😏

Thank you, Kent and Denise, for taking him on such an amazing adventure!
Sgt. Bob has officially traveled farther than most of the Fort Concho staff. 😂😭

Hope he wasn't seasick!

Wake me up when September ends...
Wait! September is just beginning!
But the Blue Star Museum program ends next Monday! So if you haven't been able to come out to the fort and take advantage of the free admission for Active-duty Military and families (and Veterans!) then you have until Labor Day to do so!

Oh, and did I mention that we are open on Labor Day?! 9AM - 5PM

It’s been hot here at the fort. Above 100 for some days! We did have a nice storm a few days ago. But otherwise, it’s been great!

Unfortunately, the puzzle postcard you bought from our Sutler Store 😉 never made it to Will & Emmy.
It has definitely seen better days!
But we were happy to receive it for them! Let us know where we can send it!

A little late, but still worth sharing!!!

Back in June, Dr. Powers joined us at the fort for his presentation of "Patriotism in the Past" as part of the 250th American and Texas series.

Well, it is finally finished!
It may have taken me a while to get this lecture posted (okay...a couple of months 😬), but we are excited to finally share it with y'all!

The Fort Concho Speaker Series will return from noon to 1 p.m. each Wednesday this September.

Each presentation will take place in the Fort Concho Commissary, 702 Burgess St. Admission is free and open to the public. Attendees are welcome to bring their own lunches.

This year’s lineup of topics and speakers includes:

Did you know that Fort Concho is a part of the Texas Forts Trail Region?

As part of the Texas Historical Commission's Heritage Trails Program, this region, that was created in 1968 by TxDot along with 9 other regions, encompasses eight US Army forts situated along the trail, including one 18th-century Spanish presidio.
According to the THC website, this is one heck of a vacation as these trails span over “a 650 mile (that is 1050km for Europeans) scenic driving loop” spanning 29 counties in Central West Texas!

Pop quiz: what other event was going on in 1968 that led to the creation of the trails?
*Hint—it wasn’t Bob’s birth year.
