National Preservation Month 2026
As we leave the month of May, let us note it is celebrated as National Preservation Month, honoring those who preserve our built heritage and noting the many benefits to saving and restoring our old buildings. Downtown San Angelo, Historic San Angelo, Old Town Historical Conservancy, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, Railway Museum of San Angelo, and many local citizens have worked tireless over the past decades in saving our past and making it attractive and useful to our community.
And, of course, we have Fort Concho! Efforts by Mrs. Ginevra Wood Carson in the late 1920s to “Save the Fort” represent one of the oldest, continuous such projects of its kind in the nation. Over the decades buildings and land have been acquired, restored, and used for exhibit areas, office space, event and rental venues, and other community support spaces.
Preserved buildings add character to our community; they support our important tourism industry; and they honor our past and the people who have built of city since 1867!
