In the 1850s, the U.S. Army briefly experimented with camels—tough, heat-resistant, and needing little water, they were tested as an alternative to horses and mules. Camels were used at the Alamo during the time that it was a U.S. Army outpost!

Excavations continued at the Alamo Church in EUs 71, 89, and 107 last week. Archaeologists completed the excavation of EUs 89 and 71.

Artifact types consisted of construction materials, a complete glass bottle, metal, and ceramic. The complete bottle is “Dr. Price's Delicious Flavoring Extracts,” a popular baking ingredient during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr. Vincent C. Price developed a commercial baking powder and formed Price Baking Powder Company in the 1880s. The baking powder business helped establish the Price family fortune for generations. Dr. Vincent C.
