The Young Upstanders Trunks help K–5 educators introduce Holocaust history through age-appropriate stories and engaging lessons designed for young learners.

These lessons encourage students to build self-awareness and empathy, recognize their developing skills and strengths, identify the people and resources that support their growth, and think critically about choices, challenges, and responsibility within a community.

As students grow, the curriculum expands beyond Holocaust history to highlight Community Upstanders — individuals who recognize needs around them and take meaningful action to strengthen their communities.

On This Day in History | St. Louis arrives in Havana, Cuba
On May 27, 1939, the steamship St. Louis arrived in Havana, Cuba, but the Cuban government revoked the passengers’ landing permits upon arrival. The United States and Canada also refused entry because the refugees did not possess immigration visas. After American newspapers reported on the crisis, many citizens expressed sympathy for the passengers. Ultimately, the refugees were dispersed across several European countries. Some later secured U.S. immigration visas and escaped before the German invasions of Western Europe in May 1940. Tragically, 240 of the ship’s 937 passengers were ultimately murdered in the Holocaust.

The Young Upstander Trunks help K–5 educators introduce Holocaust history through age-appropriate stories of ordinary people who made difficult choices to help others during dangerous times.

Each trunk includes classroom materials, ready-to-use lessons, featured upstander infographics, and carefully selected books connected to the featured individual or larger themes of courage, responsibility, community, and helping others. Some upstanders include multiple book options across grade bands, such as picture books for younger students and chapter books or biographies for older readers.

In just the past two weeks, the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio has had the privilege of welcoming and engaging more than 600 students and law enforcement cadets through our doors.

Each visit is more than a tour—it’s a moment of connection to history, reflection on human dignity, and a reminder of the responsibility we all share to stand against hatred and indifference.

We are grateful to every educator who brings their students, and to every young person who listens, asks questions, and carries these lessons forward.

There is no place for hate in our world. Be An Upstander!

The Jewish Federation of San Antonio strongly condemns the spread of antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories in public discourse. Divisive and hateful rhetoric targeting the Jewish community has no place in our civic life. San Antonio is a vibrant and diverse community, and an attack on any one group is an attack on us all. We call on all candidates and elected officials to engage in meaningful dialogue with the community and refrain from bigoted and offensive attacks.

There is no place for hate in San Antonio.

Born in Baranavichy in 1940, in what is now Belarus, Foxman survived the Holocaust as an infant after being hidden by his Polish Catholic nanny, who baptized him to hide his Jewish identity, while his parents were confined to a ghetto. After the war, he was reunited with his parents, first living in a displaced persons camp in Austria before immigrating to the United States.
Those early experiences shaped the course of his career and ultimately made him one of the most influential communal leaders of the modern era, guiding the ADL for 30 years. May his memory be for a blessing.
