Upstairs Studios is a collection of 13 gallery and creative spaces at the Blue Star Arts Complex, and serves as an anchor of the San Antonio creative community. Every first Friday the Blue Star Complex is activated by an art walk, drawing hundreds of guests. History of complex:
In 1985, Hap Veltman and Bernard Lifshutz purchased the historic Blue Star Ice and Cold Storage complex. The following y

ear, Veltman and Lifshutz offered to convert one of the warehouses into a gallery to temporarily house a cancelled San Antonio Museum of Art exhibition, that became the first exhibition of local, contemporary artists in San Antonio. The exhibit drew thousands of people, and launched the museum, as well as Contemporary Art Month!

Our Story

Throughout its history, the Blue Star Arts Complex has been home to a number of working artist studios, in addition to its galleries, performance spaces, and commercial businesses. Today the Upstairs Studios continues to be a space for artists to work in. The complex is dedicated to maintaining and improving the vision and functionality of this space. By creating a cohesive aesthetic for shared and public spaces we aim to strengthen interaction with the public, develop a more communal, supportive environment, and have an identifiable presence in the art community at large.
