Ready... Set... 30 min Monarch! I had to take a little break from art recently to allow me more time to prepare for my first year teaching. At this point in lesson planning however, I have to commit some time to trialing the projects that I want the students to do.

There are a couple reasons for this. First, I'll be more informed about what potential struggles students are likely to encounter. And second, it helps me estimate how much time will be needed for each project.

This is a demo project for 8th graders going into their 3rd week of watercolor. They will have approximately an hour to do this project, which is twice the time I gave myself.

I'm hoping this result will be the standard, with more ambitious students achieving more detail. I am anticipating some level of struggle with symmetry, although as a watercolor project this should be a very easy 1st step into using color.

Foundation for success here is all about a good observation of the subject and a willingness to take one's time during the drawing phase.
