Westside Radiance lit up the gallery this past Saturday, and the energy was absolutely unmatched! Thank you to everyone who joined us at Gallery Youngblood Art for an unforgettable night of local talent, deep community roots, and incredible music by Trio Ardiente. Here is a glimpse of the incredible magic our featured artists brought to the show: Larry Portillo: Vibrant, memorable paintings capturing iconic San Antonio landmarks. Blas E. Lopez: Powerful images rooted in Mexican heritage and Latin cultural foundations. Angelica Mayorga: Revolutionary art celebrating local wildlife and strong female protagonists. Jen Hughes: Immersive, colorful abstract landscapes bursting with true Fiesta spirit. Kandelyne Gomez: A beautifully colorful, brooding depiction of A Night In Galveston. The Westside spirit is alive, thriving, and full of color. Thank you for supporting local art!

Born in the heart of Texas and raised among the mesas of New Mexico, Larry Portillo’s life has always been a canvas of movement and color. His journey into the art world began in a high school classroom where his mentor, Steve Edwards, first saw the spark of a master. Under that guidance, Larry traded simple sketches for complex etchings and the fluid beauty of watercolors.

His education didn't stop there. Larry sought out the masters of the craft, learning the scale of murals from Leo Tanguma and the power of sculpture from the legendary Luis Jimenez. These influences merged into a style uniquely his own—a vibrant fusion of Mexican, Anglo, Indigenous, and Spanish cultures that defines the Rio Grande Valley.

Today, Larry paints to capture the simple, quiet pleasures of life. Using acrylics and oils on wood and canvas, he creates impressionistic worlds where every single brushstroke is intentional. To look at a Portillo piece is to see the Southwest through a lens of vivid, electric color. He doesn't just want you to see a landscape; he wants you to step into it, to feel the heat of the Texas sun and the spirit of the valley, inviting you to find your own story within his strokes.

Meet Jen Hughes: an artist whose work is deeply rooted in color, emotion, and resilience. ✨🎨

After more than twenty years of painting, Jen moves between two connected visual languages: bold, graphic mural-inspired compositions and textured, nature-driven abstractions. For Jen, life is rarely singular—it is both beautiful and heavy, vibrant and complex. This collection explores that tension, using layered color and organic forms to reflect the cycles of growth and transformation that shape us all.

In this work, you’ll see a striking duality. Some pieces lean toward brightness and openness, while others carry a deeper density. But look closer, and you’ll find that every "happy hue" holds a deeper meaning. For Jen, painting is both a process and an offering—a way of holding light and dark at once to create a space for reflection, connection, and recognition.

Meet Kandelyne Gomez, a self-taught force of nature whose canvases breathe life into the Chichimeca spirit.

Rooted deeply in San Antonio, Kandelyne’s work is a vibrant bridge between heritage and evolving spirituality.

By blending the emotional depth of Impressionism with the electric energy of Fauvism, she creates more than art—she creates stories. Every piece is a sanctuary of gold and jewels, celebrating the resilience of the Texan-Chicana-Indigenous identity.

From murals across the city to being named the 2025 Piñatas in the Barrio poster artist, her impact is undeniable. Kandelyne isn’t just painting; she’s a keeper of history and a champion for mothers everywhere to take up space and create without apology. 🎨✨

Step into the vivid subconscious of Blas E. Lopez

For Blas, painting isn't just a career—it’s a physical necessity. He lives to paint and paints to live, often leaping from bed in the middle of the night to sketch a flash of color or a fleeting image before a dream fades away.

His canvases serve as a bridge between worlds. Drawing from the deep wells of his Maya and Aztec ancestry, Blas weaves childhood folklore and the rugged beauty of the American Southwest into every piece. You won’t find muted browns or safe neutrals here; his world is built on a foundation of bright, high-octane color designed to leave an everlasting mark on your mind.

Experience the rush of emotion for yourself and see why Blas has never wanted to be anything but an artist.

🎨 From rural Texas roots to vibrant bird portraits, Angelica Mayorga’s art journey is a story of adaptation and passion.

What started as a childhood bond with nature evolved during the pandemic. Moving from celebrating the beauty of women to capturing the spirit of Texas birds, Angelica found a new way to connect with her audience at local open-air markets.
Today, her ongoing series of native and migratory birds has become a fan favorite, blending her love for wildlife with a fresh, fascinating perspective.

One day in 1953, Frida Kahlo’s doctors told her she was far too ill to attend her first solo exhibition in Mexico. Frida didn’t listen. Instead, she had her four-poster bed loaded onto a truck and driven to the gallery. She arrived by ambulance and spent the entire evening laughing and singing from her bed in the center of the room. Frida lived her life surrounded by art, proving that creativity isn't just a hobby—it is a lifeline.
