This year, hosted an interactive art activity, asking visitors to share their favorite Hometown Days memories, what makes San Carlos so special, and what they think 2076 will look like.

By Sunday evening, the wooden display frames were completely filled with colorful tags, each one telling a unique story, memory, or futuristic prediction about our beautiful town.

You can still be a part of it! The interactive art exhibit has officially moved to the Museum of San Carlos History!

Stop by 533 Laurel Street Saturday between 1 and 4 to check out the displays, read what your neighbors had to say and add your very own thoughts to the exhibit —what is your favorite memory of San Carlos?

Women’s History Month continues at the Museum of San Carlos History.

Doña Maria Soledad Ortega de Argüello was born near Santa Barbara in 1797. She was one of Sergeant Ortega’s 13 grandchildren. Sergeant Ortega was a member of the Portola Expedition, the first Europeans to explore the Bay Area. At the age of 25, Maria Soledad married Luis Antonio Argüello, the first native born governor of California. Upon their marriage in 1822 the newlyweds lived at the Presidio at Monterey during Luis Antonio’s governorship. Upon appointment as governor, Luis Antonio became Don Luis and his wife, Doña Maria.

After his death in 1830, she took over Rancho life herself, raising five children and defending her land in court. In 1835, her claim was officially confirmed under Mexican rule.

Later, after the Mexican-American War, she again fought to secure her rights, successfully confirming the Rancho under U.S. law.

One of the few women who didn’t just inherit history but actively shaped it.

Discover the story of Doña Maria Argüello at the Museum of San Carlos History.
