Visions Museum of Textile Art

VMOTA is an international museum dedicated to increasing the appreciation of textiles as fine art.

Visions Museum of Textile Art began as Quilt San Diego, a non-profit arts organization founded in 1985 to promote contemporary quilt making as fine art. The organization’s mission was to present the prestigious, international, juried Quilt Visions biennial which was hosted at various museums in the San Diego area. In 2007, volunteers organized a community build and created our permanent location i

n the arts district at Liberty Station in San Diego, California. The mission of Visions Museum of Textile Art is to create an international community of quilt and textile artists, collectors and the public through exhibitions, education, and engaging programs that increase the appreciation of quilts, textiles and fiber as fine art. VMOTA now features 20 exhibitions per year including Online Exhibits, Member Challenges, and our biennials; Quilt Visions and Interpretations biennials. The museum also presents lectures and workshops by noted quilt and textile artists. Admission to the Visions Museum of Textile art is free and open to the public.

Mônica Lóss is a Brazilian-born multimedia visual artist based in San Diego, CA. She holds a PhD in Arts and Education from the Universitat de Barcelona, along with advanced degrees in Education and Surface Design from the Federal University of Santa Maria in Brazil. Her work has been exhibited internationally across Brazil, the United States, Mexico, and Europe.

✨ Now on view: Unsettled Artifacts by Jill Marie Holslin

Through photography, archival documents, and woven materials, Jill Marie Holslin explores how family histories, land ownership, and memory are shaped by systems of belonging and erasure. Drawing from her family archives in rural Minnesota and photographs made on Dakota and Ojibwe lands, the exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the stories we inherit—and the histories that archives leave out.

Holstein’s layered works disrupt the authority of maps, deeds, and photographs to reveal deeper relationships between land, memory, and Indigenous histories.

Meet Blue Lady (2022) by Nancy Lemke of Bonita, California.

What began as a painted chicken on a horizontal canvas transformed into something entirely unexpected. By turning the canvas vertically, Nancy discovered the outline of a woman emerging—an intuitive moment that guided the rest of the piece. She cut the figure out, layered her onto rich fabric, and brought her to life with intricate appliqué details.

This mixed-media work features canvas, acrylic paint, commercial fabric, antique doilies, buttons, and turquoise beads—combined through painting, hand and machine stitching, and embellishments like artificial flowers and netting.
A beautiful example of letting the process lead the story. 💙
