Happy birthday to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec! The artist, born in Albi, France, to an aristocratic family, became a prominent member of the avant-garde art scene in Montmartre, Paris, in the early 1900s. He became especially well-known for his depictions of the neighborhood’s nightlife, including the famous Moulin Rouge.

ā€œA Montrougeā€ features one of Toulouse-Lautrec’s favorite models, the redheaded Carmen Gaudin. Lautrec met the model while out dining in Montmartre in 1886 with fellow artist Henri Rachou, where he caught sight of her brilliant red hair—one of his favorite features to depict. ā€œI turn to this painting to help me feel grounded when I’m overwhelmed. I like to imagine the colors streaming over the faint figure are my own varied thoughts and emotions. It helps me take a breath to acknowledge what I’m feeling while I assign each color an emotion and focus on the light breaking through to better times ahead.ā€ —Kristen Draeger, Department Manager, Visitor Engagement

Happy Bastille Day dear friends šŸ„³šŸŽ‰ On this day we can't help to think of Claude Monet's, The Rue Montorgueil in Paris, which depicts an exuberant Montorgueil Street celebration, on what many believe to be Bastille Day. But in fact this piece was painted to represent the June 30th 1878 festival for "peace and work" šŸ•ŠšŸŽØ Even so the piece is quite fitting for such a day as today 🄳
