Visit the University Art Gallery to check out all the diverse work in “Staying Power,” which includes work by current School of Art & Design faculty, Irén Tété.

Irén Tété is a sculptor focused on ceramics, architecture, and language, exploring perception, thought, and spatial navigation by blending industrial and organic elements. She expresses her poetic fragments through ceramics, creating tiles embedded with words constructed from spikes—this uneasy typography reflects boundaries and logical tangles. Her ongoing project examines how language extends the body and mind, influencing space and meaning. SDSU’s support as well as its legacy of care, for materials, ideas, and community, remains central to her involvement as it continues to shape the future of craft. (Text by Barbara Paris Gifford, Senior Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York).

Presented by Craft in America, Handwork 2026 celebrates the diversity of the crafts that define America, bringing compelling stories and underrepresented art and artists into the spotlight.

This Saturday, visit us and "Hear it From the Artist"! Each artist will talk briefly about the work on display in Staying Power.

Visit the University Art Gallery to experience “Staying Power” featuring current Professor, Sondra Sherman’s jewelry and metalwork practice.

Sondra Sherman is currently the head of the Jewelry and Metalwork Program at SDSU. Her work delves into the psychological and social contexts of jewelry, exploring personal and collective identity through its social codes. Sherman’s art invites empathetic conversations, reflecting her experiences living on the U.S.-Mexico border. Her exhibition pieces, including the D.T.L.A. series and Rorschach Corsage series, highlight the cultural landscapes of Southern California. She credits influential faculty and the unique West Coast culture with enriching her artistic practice. (Text by Barbara Paris Gifford, Senior Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, New York).
