Art in England during the 19th century was characterized by several diverse movements and interests. It witnessed the development of Romanticism, which gave way to Victorian-era social realism. This was during a time when the country underwent powerful industrialization, which revealed social change and a move toward more realism in art. Literary themes also became integrated into the subject of these paintings. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century also looked to literary works along with medieval themes as a basis for their artwork. Vibrant color, detail, and a strong focus on naturalism were also apparent in their artwork. After the 1851 Great Exhibition, photography and new printing techniques influenced both the accuracy and dissemination of art in England. Later in the century, the Arts and Crafts Movement was seen as a reaction against industrialization and a means of supporting traditional craftsmanship. The above movements and important artists of the time including JMW Turner, John Constable, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti will be discussed in this virtual docent-led talk.

In our Creative Engagement program, veterans at the VA La Jolla were invited to reflect on the writing prompt: “My life is made up of seconds…” and transform their haikus into illustrated works of art.

Through poetry and visual storytelling, participants explored memory, resilience, identity, and personal expression — reminding us how meaningful creativity can be as a tool for reflection and connection.

We are deeply grateful to the Conrad Prebys Foundation for supporting Creative Engagement and helping make programs like this possible for our community. 💙

Albrecht Dürer was one of the most influential artists of the Northern Renaissance, celebrated for his mastery of engraving, woodcut, painting, and drawing. Working in Germany while engaging deeply with Italian Renaissance ideals of realism, proportion, and human expression, he united meticulous observation of nature with mathematical precision and humanist thought. He broke new ground across media, producing some of the earliest self-portraits, pioneering lifelike studies of animals, and creating landscape drawings of unprecedented realism.

In this docent-led talk, we'll follow Dürer’s rise to fame and explore why his work continues to resonate, offering insights into both the world he lived in and the enduring power of his art.

Art in France at the beginning of the 19th century ran along the axis of revolution. After the fall of Louis XVII in 1793, the Academy no longer held a firm grip on artistic production. Artists responded to social upheaval with growing creative innovation. The French Enlightenment further expanded developments in art. Jacques-Louis David, master of Neoclassicism, ushered in the first of several “isms” that defined France’s influence across Europe. As Neoclassicism waned, painters such as Eugène Delacroix and Théodore Géricault turned to Romanticism.

This style featured rich color, powerful emotion, and exotic themes. By the mid-19th century, artists like Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet focused on the everyday struggles of working people, often depicting peasants in the fields. Later in the century, Impressionism took hold. Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro used looser brushstrokes and experimental approaches to color and light to create masterpieces beloved today. These artists and others will be discussed in this docent-led virtual talk.

Did you know the Timken is home to San Diego's only Rembrandt? 🎨

Our volunteer docent Dr. Marion de Koning — a Dutch-born art historian who first fell in love with art at age 5 standing before Girl with a Pearl Earring — brings that same sense of wonder to every tour she leads through our galleries.

Her advice? "You don't have to whisper because the art doesn't care."

From helping kids pick their favorite painting to revealing the hidden stories behind masterpieces, Dr. de Koning is one of over 50 volunteer docents who make visiting the Timken an unforgettable experience — and it's always free.

📍 Come see the Rembrandt (and maybe meet Dr. de Koning) — open Wed–Sun, 10AM–5PM in Balboa Park.
