to June 18, 1981 and the first flight of the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk. It is hard to believe that the airplane’s groundbreaking stealth technology is 45 years old! The Nighthawk is now retired from active service but is still occasionally used as a training plane.

Objects don't have to be big to be historically significant. This piece of metal is from one of the 29 Japanese aircraft shot down during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941. NASA will announce the four-person crew who will fly aboard the Orion Capsule for Artemis 3! Much like the historic Apollo 9 mission, Artemis 3 will stay in low Earth orbit to help test critical systems and capabilities that will advance the next era of space exploration.

Did you know you can see the actual Apollo 9 Command Module right here at the San Diego Air & Space Museum! This historic spacecraft flew in space and played a vital role in proving the technologies that helped make lunar missions possible. Find Command Module “Gumdrop” inside our Space exhibit! Open daily from 10am to 4:30pm.
