🛠️ Tips & Tricks Tuesday — Artist's Narrative Bio 🛠️

One of the most common questions we get, even from mid-career artists, is "What should be in my bio?"

The short answer is pretty straight forward: who you are and what you do. It's not your artist statement or a history. Think of it as a basic introduction.

We've found this very helpful article online that breaks a basic bio down and even has templates!
https://www.artsume.com/guides/how-to-write-artist-bio

The longer answer is that, over time, and especially for interdisciplinary artists, capturing the entirety of your practice in a basic format can get tricky. In future posts, we'll share more resources on how to take the next step in making your bio authentic and meaningful. But for now, just know, a basic bio like the one in this article will pretty much always be what people are looking for. Keep it simple, keep it succinct, and you're good to go. No tricks needed. 🖤🤍

Write an artist bio that introduces you professionally. Short bio examples, long bio templates, and the difference between bios and artist statements.

🎨 Archives of Radical Joy at Startup Art Fair 🖤🤍

This week we're centering artistic process and collaboration across our ongoing projects with Archives of Radical Joy, recently released at Startup Art Fair in SF.

Archives of Radical Joy explores joy as a shared and documented practice and centers the diverse practices of ten BWP artists with a limited edition, accessibly-priced, fine-art print suite.

As a non-profit partner of the fair, we were able to highlight our relational (vs transactional) exhibition practice—the majority of our artists were there to talk about their own and each others work, share resources with visitors, and spend time connecting with each other and the artists in the fair.

Check out photos of Archives of Radical Joy at Startup Art Fair, look through the catalogue, and purchase the prints at https://blackandwhiteprojects.com/bwp-at-startup-art-fair-sf/

Black & White Projects centers artist-led decision-making across all programming, and we continue to sustain our work through exhibitions, editions, and community support structures that extend beyond a single event or moment. Participation is welcome. Questions are encouraged. 🖤🤍

We are proud to be a gallery sponsor for Root Division 's annual , featuring an eclectic mix of high quality artwork from over 160 established and emerging Bay Area artists! This year, we're joined by BWP artists Susan R. Kirshenbaum, Evelyn Leder, and Rhiannon Evans MacFadyen.

Including plenty of shining and rising stars, the artwork is on display at Root Division’s gallery, and all artwork is available for online bidding. Their Main Event will feature both a silent and a live auction (led by esteemed Bonhams Auctioneer Aaron Bastian). Check out the options to join the fun and at https://rootdivision.org/auction/art-auction-2025/

Proceeds directly support local artists, free art classes for Bay Area youth, and the continued success of Root Division’s unique model for keeping artists working at the heart of San Francisco.
