Hiroshige II was a pupil of the Edo-period master Hiroshige who took on the name of his master and continued to carry on the tradition of Hiroshige’s artistic sensibilities and skills following his master’s death. In this captivating work by Hiroshige II from 1860 as part of his “100 Famous Views in the various Provinces” series, we see people from a village fishing for lamprey, eel, and rockfish on Lake Suwa, located in the Kiso Mountains in Shinano Province in Nagano Prefecture. The smoke from a large bonfire set below cuts through the composition and is wonderfully effective in capturing the viewers attention. A rare and stunning work which you can see gallery in SF.
