Sailing Science Center is once again supporting California Coastal Cleanup Day. We're thrilled to return to Treasure Island. Not only because a few years ago one of our volunteers found a $5 bill, but because this is for a great cause in the big outdoors. Plus, this year, we'll be working aside stewards from the City of San Francisco Environmental Department and SF Blue Tech group.

10:00am to 12:00pm

Volunteers will determine where they want to clean, then head out. Bring the family, bring friends... picking up litter is more fun while talking with others about sailing, the ocean and back to school.

Pack gloves, hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes and a water bottle. Dress in mucky apparel.

With summer almost over, and young adults headed back to class, how can we take sailing into the classroom and schoolwork? One classic is calculating how long it will take to get somewhere.

Look at the art of moving a boat from point A to point B using Speed, Distance and Time.
Calculating arrival times using knots (nautical miles per hour) translates directly to standard rate algebra problems (d = rt).

Sailing is a great lab substitute where we can take abstract textbook formulas and illustrate them into tangible, memorable experiences.

Empowering youth through the intersection of sailing and science.

At our events, enthusiastic young builders and thinkers get hands-on time with one of our newest exhibits: the block and tackle pulley system. By exploring how simple machines multiply force, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the mechanics behind sailing, physics and engineering.

This kind of discovery wouldn't be possible without our passionate community of volunteer docents. Thank you for donating your time, energy and expertise to inspire ocean and STEM leaders of tomorrow.

Sailing Science Center (SSC) builds and shares hands-on, interactive exhibits that help learners of all ages visualize and better understand various principles of science, math and physics for the sport of sailing. Our STEM-based displays are designed and built by a team of adult volunteers.

Yesterday, we took a day off from our own schedule to go cheer peers at Rocking the Boat SF--where the tide is flipped and the STEM-builders are young learners (as guided by adults). Over the past several months, sixteen 9th and 10th graders applied STEM and STEAM education to build a beautiful new wooden boat—a replica of a 1906 vessel named the Alderbrook, which is San Francisco Whitehall style rowboat common throughout the Bay during the 19th century.

The new boat will remain at India Basin Waterfront Park, where community members may request to hop on a free ride every other Saturday.

Who says learning has to stay in the classroom? At the San Francisco Sailing Science Center, kids get their hands wet while exploring the physics and science of wind, water and waves. From understanding how sails capture the breeze, to figuring out how buoyancy works, we’re turning summer fun into a learning lab.
